Milan Want Eto’o, But Only in a Totally Classy Way
By: Martha | June 7th, 2007
After reports surfaced in the press yesterday that Milan were on the verge of a £30 million deal for Barca’s Samuel Eto’o, the club flashed back to last summer’s righteous indignation over Real’s pursuit of Ricky Kaka and went into damage control overdrive.
Within hours, an official statement appeared on the Milan website confirming the club’s interest in Eto’o, but making it very clear that they intended to chase him only in a proper, dignified manner. That chase will include making a formal offer for the player, but not until the La Liga season is over. Because you know Milan would never, ever want to even appear to be doing something improper or — gasp — illegal.
Away from the spin machine, it’s hard not to see Eto’o as Milan’s main transfer target. Given the shortage of goals much of last season, the steadily decreasing odds of Sheva leaving Chelsea and the seeming inevitability of Gila’s departure, the Rosoneri clearly need at least one attacker, and they’re one of the few clubs who could afford Eto’o, were he to be made available. At the moment, their primary, confirmed competition for the striker — apart from Barcelona, that is — looks to be Liverpool, a club without the Champions League winners’ medals massive funds available to Milan.

I think Liverpool will eventually have the massive funds, just waiting for the new owners (Gillet and Hicks) to splash the cash.

Liverpool needs plenty of cash to buy players across all positions on the field and not just upfront, if they are thinking of mounting a serious charge at winning the premiership or Champions League. Given that, if they spend all of that money, which the new owners have promised, on one player, Eto’o, because he aint gonna come cheap, no one will have any doubts about where they will finish next season.
