Milan’s Latest Transfer List Has Herr Berlusconi Considering New Mortgages
By: Martha | February 27th, 2007
Taking a break from reporting on Juve’s summer plans, the papers today are full of the big-name targets being tracked by Milan (and Inter — more on that later), some of them confirmed and others alleged.
In the former category for Milan are that classy devil, Gianluigi Buffon, and Ronaldinho, whose name has been fancifully associated with the red and black for months now. The thing about the “confirmation” is that it’s laughably vague — someone asked Milan’s director general (whatever that means) Ariedo Braida about the two players and, since Silvio Berlusconi had previous said something like “Yeah, those dudes are good!”, Braida seems to have been unable to do anything but “confirm” the interest. Not because the club are necessarily pursing the players, mind you, but because “Our President’s words are never put under discussion.” Ah, of course. (I’m sure there’s an “In Soviet Russia” joke in here somewhere.)
According to calculations done by someone smarter than I, the cost of the two players, combined with five years of wages for both, would be somewhere in the neighborhood of £178 million. Yes, that is more than any of us will make in our lifetimes, thanks for asking. Maybe Berlusconi can sell off a TV station or two to fund the bids.
Oh, and also: They supposedly made an offer for Robinho in January, might be eying Celtic keeper Artur Boruc as a Buffon replacement, and may offer poor, mistreated Pippo Inzaghi to Roma in exchange for Vincenzo Montella, who is currently tearing it up on loan with Fulham. Just to keep you up to speed.
