News Roundup as He-Man Rages at the Foreigners

Suck it, Ollie.•Bayern Munich’s resident crotchety old man, Oliver Kahn, recently gave an interview in which he ripped the team’s unnamed new arrivals, saying they need to “learn that two or three good games aren’t enough” and, oh yeah, learn to speak freaking German while they’re at it. I’m sure Luca Toni went over and gave him a big, Italian hug when he read that in paper this morning.

•Antonio Cassano finds his own antics hilarious. Oh, good. Big chance for improvement, then.

•Not content to take a vacation like his Shakhtar teammates and get fat waiting for a transfer, Cristiano Lucarelli is back home in Italy, training with amateur side Picchi in order to stay fit and make himself look as alluring as possible for the Italian sites who will come calling once the transfer window opens. Now that even Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu has admitted that a move back to Serie A might be “the right thing for Cristiano,” it seems much less a question of if than when, and to whom. (The latest rumors say Palermo, which seems mad.)

•Manchester United’s Louis Saha told the press at an anti-racism and bullying conference yesterday that he’s expecting to face racism tomorrow at the Olimpico. Jesus. Let’s hope he’s disappointed, huh?

•According to the never-reticent Massimo Moratti, Inter want Mahamadou Diarra, Jeremy Menez and, along with half of Europe, Daniele De Rossi. Meanwhile, in the outgoing tray: Sao Paolo still want Adriano (but won’t make any offers because they’re ethical like that), while Hernan Crespo wants to go back to River Plate, if and when Diego Simeone is appointed coach (said to be very soon). Got all that?

•Napoli have been fined €10,000 as punishment for their supporters aiming laser-pointers at Parma players during Sunday’s match, particularly at Domenico Morfeo, who somehow managed not to flip out over it. Hee.

•After his wife’s death, Cesare Prandelli briefly considered packing it in, but Fiorentina supporters are so effing fantastic he decided to stay. Damn right.

  • Ah, I see now thanks Martha. I didn't read the article in the link because I read the story before on the Gazzetta.

  • Yep, Marco, all that stuff's in the link that section points to! The statement on the English version of the website said just says "The reasons behind the shock reprimand would be dealt with internally."

  • Actually Martha, it wasn't Toni that gave Kahn a big hug... it was the Bayern powers in charge. Only, it was a bear-hug: the German keeper has been temporarily dropped from the team for one game (he'll be forced to miss their next game vs. Hertha Berlin) and will have to pay a €25,000 fine.

Bayern released to the press that the official reason for the suspension is that Kahn left the official Xmas club party early last Saturday, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Bayern powers that be didn't want to teach the German keeper a lesson for opening his mouth too much.

  • Really? A top-line starter, or someone to come off the bench late and add support in case of injuries? (You know, like your very own Bobo.)

  • I do believe we are still looking for an extra striker...

  • Heh. You'd think the people who make these things up would do research into stuff like that. (Not to mention that it's hard to imagine you people going for a striker.)

  • Martha, the Lucarelli-rumor is pure rubbish, as Palermo isn't his hometown. It's Livorno, of course :)
