Palermo: Very, Very Please About This Miccoli Fellow

By: Martha | July 26th, 2007

The Dodgy Eyebrow, in the FleshHe may be almost comically short and also possessing of a seriously dodgy sense of personal style, but that Fabrizio Miccoli can score. In Palermo’s match with Austrian side Kaernten yesterday, the new arrival scored two goals in 45 minutes, leading his team to a 3-1 win; for those of you keeping track, that’s a total of five goals in two games. And, even though three of them were part of a 15-0 thrashing, five in two is still pretty damn impressive — particularly when you consider that he’s scored them playing a total of only 90 minutes.

Clearly this preseason opposition isn’t quite up to the level of the teams in Serie A, but goals is goals, man — any team would be thrilled to have a guy scoring at this rate, no matter who they’re playing. You never know (as everyone says) in football, but at the moment dumping the deeply irritating and minimally productive Andea Caracciolo and replacing him with Miccoli is looking like a stroke of genius.

Palermo, though, aren’t resting on their laurels: It’s being reported in Italy that they preparing a substantial — and likely doomed — bid for Torino’s Alessandro Rosina. The offer will allegedly consist of €6 million Euros, plus Mark Bresciano and young defender Leandro Rinaudo, who spent last season on loan with Siena; if nothing else, the deal would reunite Bresciano with his old midfield companion Eugenio Corini. I’m guessing a bald midfield just won’t be enough to sell Torino on the offer, though.
