Project Mutu is Go!

I don’t want to know. You know that Adriano Mutu reality show (AKA Adrian Has an Iron and He’s Not Afraid to Use It) I mentioned a week ago? Well, it turns out the rumors were true, and that Mutu has actually agreed to do the show, apparently for the originally stated price of $2 million.

Believe it or not, this isn’t being put together by a bunch of hacks: It’ll be produced (supposedly) by William MacDonald — among other things, he also writes and produces a little show called Rome — and directed by John Daily. I know, I’m surprised, too. (And also very sad that the golf John Daly isn’t involved, because that would just be fantastic.) As per the contract, Mutu will be filmed during matches and at home but, now that he’s classy and all, is refused to allow the cameras into his bedroom. Curses! I mean, I’d imagine all of his wife’s fans will find that clause upsetting. Me, I’m interested only in the football.

But wait, I’ve not even told you the exciting news yet: In addition to Romania, the show will reportedly air in Italy, Latin America and … the US! Woo hoo! I have no idea who decided that was a good idea, but I’m not going to complain. (My guess is on the Reality Channel. Either that or late-night on Gol TV.) The run of Mutu Show (Sigh. Seriously?) is expected to be about three months, starting in September, with multiple episodes running each week.

I don’t mind saying I find this awesome. At the very least, it’s sure to be better than that dreadful Beckham show I flip past all the time on Gol TV.

Yesterday the show aired, sadly I didn't get the chance to see the opening episode, the promotion clips were BRILLIANT.

Mutu's show hauled in 3% ( Approx 1.1M people in Romania ) of the Romanian Television Audiance in 10-10.30 at night on a week-day.

Thats magnificant if you ask me, and he's even more popular in Italy, how many shows top over 1M people late at night and on a week day, regardless.. Mutu is selling himself as one of the greats in Football, now he just needs to win Euro 2008.

It never ceases to amaze me the extent to which us humans will push our voyeuristic instincts.

Martha, I don't known if you were blogmaster back then, but do you know a few years ago they made a "Big Brother"-type reality show of a soccer team in Italy? It was called "Campioni, il sogno" (Champions, the dream) and lasted for about two seasons. I didn't really follow it since I wasn't living in Italy back then, but I guess that if it stopped, the audience must of have gotten pretty tired of it.

I wonder how long the Mutu show is really going to last...

His wife is hot and 4 of the 5 women in my household (ages 5-35) think HE is hot... You just know they're going to double date with Boba and Satta a couple times, too. It could be successful. At least as successful as Footballer's Wives as I'm sure I can understand him better than I understand cockney.

I'm not proud, tmc, but I saw that movie in the theater. (That said, I don't think I remember any dialog, so you may be worse-off than I am).

Outside of the appeal for Romanian TV, I don't really get it either. Assuming the club had to give their ok, it's certainly a sign of how much confidence they now have in Mutu's ability to focus on football -- what a change from 18-24 months ago.

Mark, you're a genius. From here on out, it will be called MuTube here. It's the least I can do.

I think we can all agree that this show needs to be called MuTube. There needs to be a Cassano and Adriano version too

To quote a terrible movie (Varsity Blues - this sticks out for some reason, I have no idea why) "When did the circus get to town, because I didn't see no trucks ..."

Although maybe this will allow Fiorentina to attract the players they can apparently afford to buy but then refuse to pay more than the 1.5 million Euro salary cap (I'm still pretty confident that the boys will play well enough to qualify for Champions League for the 3rd year running and then the salary cap will be lifted once we get that European $$$). Just give everyone a reality show to make up the lost wages.

There is a lot of free time so hopefully this won't mess with his performance on the pitch, but I'm a bit concerned.
