Quick News Round-Up as a Small Corner of London (Almost) Gets More Italian

By: Martha | October 1st, 2007

Hello, London!•John Gregory has finally been sacked by QPR; Gianluca Vialli and Billy Costacurta are still top of the list to replace him. Trust an Italian owner (well, if the takeover ever actually happens, that is) to bring in an Italian manager — I suppose he’s got more to choose from among his countrymen than the Americans, the Thai and the Russian, huh?

•Don’t look now, but Inter have five actual defenders on their teamsheet for tomorrow’s game against PSV.

•To the shock of no one who reads this site, Francesco Totti is dropping hints back coming back to the Azzurri. Sounds like he plans to let them get through the Euros and World Cup qualifying on their own, though, and would come back only for the World Cup itself. Is that faith in the team or incredible arrogance? Both?

•When his suspension for slapping that poor steward finally runs out, Jonathan Zebina won’t be out of the woods yet: The slapee is going to sue him in civil court. Doh!

•Oddly under-reported crowd trouble at the Turin derby resulted in 50 arrests yesterday. And, in a bit of news related to midweek crowd trouble, Inter have canceled all online and visiting section ticket sales for their match against Napoli next Saturday, and are selling tickets only face-to-face, with a limit of one ticket per person. Great. So, that’s one match without away supporters, one in a closed ground, dozens of arrests, and restricted tickets sales for a match — not to mention all the arrests of armed Lazio supporters during the week — all in less than two months. Jesus. And all these new rules are helping?

•Gila for Tomasso Rocchi? How’s that again?

They are helping because now the Police are acutally doing something instead of letting it happen like they use to before. Marfa(can I call you Marfa), violence is not going to go out of Italian football just overnight is it? I am just happy the police are taking it seriously now.

As for Gila for Rocchi? Tribalfootball anyone? and there is seriously no way Lazio can afford Gilardino wages. But if that was not a problem then I would love to see Gilardino at Lazio. It is better then seeing a very talented, young Italian striker waste his career away. But like I said it is not going to happen.

Marfa makes me feel a bit like a muppet, but I can take it.

Agreed that the Gila story is dubious, but I suppose the money part of it depends on how desperate Milan are come Christmas. I mean, Samp are “affording” Cassano right now, with a whole lot of help from Real, right?

Speaking of Real, what’re your honest thoughts on that match? Are you in a panic, or do you think Lazio will be able to keep it tight and claw their way to a draw?

Martha: Well, get used to it Martha because in England we have a tendency to pronouce the “th” sound like a “f” sound. Common examples include “funder” for “thunder”, “faye” or “vaye” for “they” and of course “fissle” for “thistle”. And besides…Martha is streotypical Grannies name. You know it is…

Yeah, well considering Sampdoria have a higher wage bill then Lazio, that is not suprising. At Lazio we play our players next nothing compared with the big boys.

I am thinking the same thing as you…I hope we don’t get our asses handed to us. As long as we do not lose 7-1 I’ll take it. That is optimism Lazio style.

Yay! Chivu’s back for Inter. If Roma Chris’s curse works though, he’ll inevitably break all of his teeth by going for an aerial ball and a PSV striker bicycle kicks his head instead of the ball.

Concerning Totti, the article you linked Martha was Gazzetta citing Spanish magazine Don BalĂłn, which had reportedly published the Roma captain’s interview. However 24 hours later, Gazzetta is now reporting that Totti never released that interview, and the magazine made the whole thing up. “I have never spoken with that magazine nor with any of their journalists” declared Totti, through a press release from the Roma club.

So much for accurate journalism… I’ve written about that interview myself on my Man Utd-Roma preview on Soccerlens. :(

Honestly, Marco, I’m starting to wonder if any press aren’t just making shit up. (Alternately, of course, maybe the club told Totti to shut up and he released the statement pretending it never happened. I don’t read Spanish, but I’d be surprised if the magazine came out and said “Yep, total lie. Little joke there.”)
