Ronaldinho Eases Closer to Milan
By: Martha | May 12th, 2007
After Barca’s humiliating cup defeat to Getafe last week, Ronaldinho was verbally abused by fans, some of whom rather angrily suggested — in so many words — that he take his sorry as to Milan and stop wasting their time. Now, while as far as I know Barcelona fans aren’t actually in charge of the club’s activities on the transfer market, it just so happens that, just a few days later, Frank Rijkaard spoke to the press in a strangely resigned tone, suggesting it was time for the club to move on rather than try to cling to the core that has made the club so magical for the past several years.
Rijkaard apparently believes that any given team can only sustain play at a high lever for “three or four” years and suggests that, as the decline begins, wholesale changes are more effective than a desperate attachment to the old, propped up by periodic, desperate tweaks. In other words, “…It is necessary to change, both within the squad and in its management … This group has played very well, but it is only normal that there have to be other projects on the horizon.”
To get from “necessary to change” and “other projects on the horizon” to “goodbye, Ronaldinho (and Deco?)” doesn’t take a very significant leap. Given Milan’s embarrassingly tight relationship with the striker’s agent (who was just in Milan and is reportedly due there again soon, coincidentally just as the transfer window opens) and everyone’s constant assertion that the Rossoneri are “in pole position” should Barca be willing to let him go, this could be the first concrete step towards Ronnie’s long-discussed move to Italy.
