Saddest News of the Week: Say Goodbye to the Holy Rollers

By: Martha | December 19th, 2006

Non-footballing Pope.Yesterday everyone, from lowly bloggers like myself to the hallowed mainstream media, was in a gleeful tizzy at the thought of a Vatican football team one day competing in Serie A. If nothing else, the opportunities for hilariousness were myriad: Playing on Sunday, being good at crosses, robes getting in the way, the possibility of Vatican City facing Celtic in a hot-blooded Champions League match (thanks to Cham for that little bit of brilliance). What could be better than an actual, sanctioned connection between the Pope and football? Even UEFA were excited, immediately approving the concept.
Today, though, we were all brought crashing down to earth by the words of Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the very man who got us so excited in the first place: He says he was joking, the bastard. Apparently he’s going to be far too busy with Papal matters to organize a football team. Whatever, dude. How much help could the Pope possibly need? The masses have spoken, and we want Papal football!
