Sergio Ramos to Milan? Wha?
By: Martha | November 8th, 2007
The Italian newspapers today are full of the news that Milan are considering a bid for Real Madrid’s dreamy (so I hear, anyway) Sergio Ramos. Clearly this is untrue, since Ramos is only 21 and therefore far too young to even get a chance in the Rossoneri defense, but the rumor is out there, tenuous as it might be.
The story comes from Marca in Spain: The paper claims that Carlo Ancelotti has specifically asked ownership to buy Ramos as a way of shoring up the team’s aging, unpredictable defense. There are no quotes, though, so it could easily have just been made up. That said, it IS true that Milan were interested in Ramos when he left Sevilla two years ago (the papers say they actually made a bid), and Arrigo Sacchi really did compare the Spaniard to Paolo Maldini in an interview a year ago. Plus, there aren’t a lot of teams around that wouldn’t be interested in bringing in someone of Ramos’ youth and ability.
There is, however, the little issue of a contract that runs through 2013, with a clause dictating that it’ll cost €150 million for anyone to pry Ramos away from Real. God damn. And here is where we find what is probably the reason the story was written: Since anyone paying €150 million cash for a player seems pretty crazy, Marca assume that any deal for the defender would consist of a combination of cash and and a body. Whose body? Hmm. Oh, wait — here’s an idea! How about Kaka? [Insert eye-roll here.]
Yeah. Probably, this story is entirely made up, just another way for Marca to create a pretend reality in which the Brazilian moves to Real. Ah well. It’s fun to think about, anyway — imagine the hair on a Milan backline that brings Ramos and Nesta together.
