Thank God For Tom Cruise

By: Martha | January 13th, 2007

Sage Tom.Just when you thought there wasn’t a single good reason for the LA Galaxy and MLS to invest $250 million in a hard-working, tabloid magnet whose best days are behind him, the Italian press have come up with a great one: To save both Becks and Adriano Galliani from total humiliation. You see, according to reports in Italy, Milan had essentially signed Beckham to a three-year deal worth £2.8 million/year which included full rights to his image (something he’s denied at Real) and he was all set to join the team when his contract with Real expired this summer — until, that is, Tom Cruise intervened.

Yes, that says Tom Cruise. I know. Though poor, dim Becks hasn’t explicitly said that Cruise ordered him to bring his skeletal wife to LA, he did reveal that he spent many hours on the phone with his new BFF during the decision-making process. “Obviously,” said Beckham, “I asked him for his advice because he is a very wise man and a very good friend of mine.” Sigh.

On one hand, it’s cringingly pathetic that the man thinks Tom Cruise, who has manged to completely torpedo his own career over the past nine months, is the oracle of wisdom. On the other hand, however, if he hadn’t sought Tom’s sage advice, he might be playing in Italy next season, so we probably should be happy he’s so deluded. Maybe we all ought to get together and send Cruise a thank you card, or something.

You know, every time I start to think that Beckham isn’t all that bad he goes and does something like mention he is buddies with a total knob like Tom Cruise. Why couldn’t it be someone cool like Bruce Willis bringing Becks and Skelator to lalaland?

Next thing you know, they’ll be converting to Scientology. Doesn’t that kind of boggle the mind?
