The Little Aeroplane Flies Home

At long last, Vincenzo Montella is going back to Sampdoria, the club he left eight long years ago for stardom with Roma. After spending the second half of last season on loan with Fulham — an arrangement that started blazingly well but faltered rather quickly when he struggled to get on the pitch — the striker is now returning to the club for whom he scored more than a goal per game during a three-year stay in the mid-late 90s.
While it’s hard to imagine anyone begrudging Montella a fantastic end to his career, this is a bit of a crapshoot (albeit a cheap one) for Samp. He’s 33 years old now and, from a realistic standpoint, anything he gives has to be considered a bonus. That said, since Francesco Flachi is now gone (stupid recreational drugs), Samp are in desperate need of strikers and must be beyond thrilled to have Montella back.
Even if you don’t care about Samp, how great would it be to see Montella really take off (pun mostly unintended) this season, after months of exile on the Roma and (eventually) Fulham benches?
