Toni Leaving, Crespo Staying

By: Martha | May 29th, 2007

Bad Idea jeans.Though it’s been a foregone conclusion since at least December, Fiorentina officially opened the door to Luca Toni’s departure yesterday. Club president Andrea Della Valle formally met with the striker over the weekend, and after pleasantries were exchanged (”Hi Luca, thanks for scoring all those goals.” “No problem, Mr. Valle, sir. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got money to make elsewhere.”), Valle emerged with the news that he’d officially given Toni the OK to throw himself at other clubs. Shocking, I know. As far as Bayern are concerned, Franz Beckenbauer is still talking about Toni being a target, but no one has yet confirmed whether he’s actually signed or not.

Meanwhile, up north in Milan, Hernan Crespo is happy for the first time since he let someone shave his head: Nothing is official yet, but Chelsea have reportedly agreed to let him stay at Inter. Hurrah — apparently the Argentine’s clever ploy of changing his appearance, hiding and not answering his phone actually worked! (He also might want to give Giuseppe Rossi some tips on how to make the end of loan periods go away.) It’s unclear whether the loan will be extended or if Inter will buy the player outright, but whatever the clubs decide, this is looking to be Crespo’s first non-transfer summer in years — how will he even know summer is here if he’s not in a press conference, holding up a new kit and grinning?

As always, take with a grain of salt, but Bild claim Bayern are settling details regarding the transfer on Wednesday. And the Gazzetta article also seems pretty sure he’s going to Bayern.

Andrea Della Valle just announced Luca is heading to Germany. I guess it’s kinda official.

YAYYYYY for Crespo staying! (I don’t like his new hair, but if that’s what it takes to stay…it’ll grow back!)

Some people are saying it was a bet; have you heard anything, Martha?

That would certainly explain it, Nelly! I’d love to hear the story there — I’ll keep my ear out and post if I hear anything.

And thanks, guys, for the linkage to the Toni stories — it’s so refreshing to have a rumor actually turn out to have been based in fact.
