Trouble Brewing in Palermo (Again)

By: Martha | April 23rd, 2007

Dead man walkin. In the wake of yesterday’s demoralizing loss the Parma, Palermo were supposed to have the day off, presumably to think about what they’d done and get even more depressed. Instead, meetings have been taking place all day at Palermo HQ, and as usual things aren’t looking good for poor Francesco Guidolin. Every move by Guidolin, sporting director Rino Foschi (AKA Rino Gloomy, in the world of Google translate), club president Maurizio Zamparini, captain Eugenio Corini and the team as a whole are being documented in insane detail by Palermo’s Stadio News (Corini met for an hour with Gloomy! The team met without Guidolin!), so I’ve been totally sucked in and will be sitting here refreshing all freaking day.

The latest from Zamparini is that a decision on Guidolin’s status will be made by 6pm in Italy, which is about an hour from when this post went live. And, given the team’s recent results and the fact that the gaffer has been sleeping with his head in a guillotine for the past several months, it’s no surprise the president is already saying that he has “little chance” or survival. Man. You know, when all this started, I was fully in Guidolin’s corner — the team were performing beyond their ability for much of the first half, and the loss of Amauri was a huge blow. Now, though, his execution has been stayed over and over and he’s proven himself unable to right the Rosanero ship — at this point? He really deserves to go. It’s absurd that Zamparini has drawn the drama out for this long, but Guidolin has done nothing to keep his place; if anything other than a sacking comes out of today’s meetings, I think pretty much everyone — the Guidolin more than anyone else — will be stunned.

Edit: As expected, Guidolin – along with two members of his staff – is gone. He’s being replaced by his former assistant Renzo Gobbo (the man Google likes to call Hunchback) and youth team coach Rosario Pergolizzi.

The Guidolin? You’ve been spending too much time with Google Translate. :)

And yeah, time for him to go. As much for his own sake as for the team’s. It can’t be good for your state of mind to know that pretty much everyone is taking bets on how much longer before you get the sack.
