Week 11, Or: Draw Mania

By: Martha | November 5th, 2007

Aggro ArgieSeven of this week’s 10 matches ended in draws — some of them incredibly exciting, despite the shared points — including those featuring three of the top four teams. Roma dropped two points in Tuscany thanks to Empoli’s amazing fightback, while Inter and Juve beat the hell out of one another in Turin and ended up with a point each, a result that, despite what everyone at Inter is say, was entirely just. An exhausted Fiorentina squad, meanwhile, did just enough to squeeze past Lazio and, as a result, jumped to second in the table. They’re on 23 points, two behind leaders Inter and just one ahead of Roma; Roma, in turn are one clear of Juve. To sum up: Things are delightfully tight at the top, and they show no sign of opening up any time soon.

I know I usually jump right over the middle of the table, but I feel obligated to do a Milan update, and since that’s where they are, I suppose I need to touch on it. As you may recall, they drew against a very tough Torino team, a match which, oddly, seems to have left Rossoneri supporters encouraged. (If you needed any evidence of how far they’ve fallen, that’s it — looking good in a draw with a bottom side is suddenly a good sign.) The point lifted them into the top half of the table, but only just: Heading into next week’s visit to sixth-place Atalanta, they’re tied with three other clubs on 14 points, 11 off the top and only five from the relegation playoff.

The teams at the bottom, meanwhile, haven’t changed: Reggina and Livorno, who both drew yesterday, are joint bottom on six, with Siena, Cagliari and Empoli huddled together three points above them, scrambling for safety. Within easy reach are Lazio, on 10, Parma, with 11, and Torino, who have 12 and are desperately inching away, a point at a time.

Full results, top of the table after the jump.

Cagliari – Sampdoria 0-3
Catania – Atalanta 1-2
Empoli – Roma 2-2
Genoa – Palermo 3-3: Two goals for Leon — I’m telling you, that guy is a stud. There are a lot of reason to watch Genoa, but even if there weren’t he’d be enough, just on his own.
Juventus – Inter 1-1
Lazio – Fiorentina 0-1
Livorno – Udinese 0-0
Milan – Torino 0-0
Napoli – Reggina 1-1: A injury time equalizer? Against Reggina? What’s up, Napoli?
Parma – Siena 2-2
