Welcome Back, Genoa and Napoli!

As Daryl reported yesterday, the old guard is finally back in Serie A. Thanks to typically bizarre Italian rules, both Napoli and Genoa were automatically promoted yesterday after Piacenza and Triestina drew, a result which left the gap between the third and fourth at 10 points — and, magically, the playoffs were canceled.

So Napoli and Genoa fans and players partied together (The best part of the video is at about 2:20, when Napoli coach Edoardo Reja, mid “post-game” interview, says “Oops. It’s not over.” and heads back to the sideline.); the only niggling disappointment was the fact that Sophia Loren didn’t turn up to get her kit off. That Sophia is a woman of her word, however, so surely the strip-tease is coming later this week.

So, finally, the 2007-2008 Serie A is sorted: Juve, Napoli (An early contender for best kit in calcio?) and Geona are up, while we wave a final goodbye to poor Ascoli (this season’s holders of my entirely arbitrary Best Kit title), Chievo and Messina.

Bring on August!

  It’s great to see Napoli back in the big league, but it’s much too early to call them a “Best Kit” contender. Palermo ’s jersey is always a tough one to beat, and Atalanta could be a summer surpriser; it’s been 100 years of fleet-footed Bergamasci goodness, and look for them to come up with something special for this season’s centennial.

  I do love the Palermo pinks, but that lovely light blue is going to be hard to beat. As for Atalanta, it’s hard for me to imagine them wearing anything cool, but I’ll try to withhold judgment.

  Apparently Milan have a new jersey out already, per http://footballocks.net/index.php/260/ac-milans-new-home-away-strip/

  I think it’s worse than the current one, but the photos aren’t that good so maybe we just need to wait.

  ps: I submitted to Moratti a re-design of Inter’s jersey, which received a scathing rebuke; he didn’t like my interpretaion which had a strong resemblance to the virgin mary.

  Graphically speaking, I sort of love the new Inter kit, though the red and white is bit of a tough adjustment. As for Milan’s, they get worse every freaking year — what’s with those giant, black shoulders? And why do they make football shirts with collars? Is that so Pippo can pop his, and think he’s trendy?

  Eric Cantona is the only man who has ever been, and will ever be, cool enough to pop his collar and not look like a fool. In fact, curiously enough, he managed to be even more of boss when he did. That being said, thumbs down on the Milan collars.

  The new Inter shirt is derived from the symbol of their region Lombardia, which is also seen as a small shield on the back of the current jersey. Their new kit kinda reminds me of Parma’s “badass black cross” shirt, which I thought brought them bad luck when they were almost relegated during that shirt’s debut; apparently it had nothing to to do with it since those antics have continued to this day.

  I agree with you regarding the collars, and tend not to buy those jerseys… except for the Juve shirt from a few years back. Nothing’s hotter than wearing a giant D+ on your chest while in college.

  You should ask some fashionistas for their verdicts on the best jerseys. Whatever the results might be, I don’t think any current Italian shirts match the bizarreness of those Werder Bremen sport.

  Yeah, wikipedia learned me all about the red cross but, still, for us youngsters (meaning anyone under 120), it’s hard not to think of red as Milan.

  V-SPOT (I admire a man who yells his name), you’re so right on about Cantona. He somehow made utter twatage cool when he popped that collar.

  Token, I freaking love those Bremen kits. Orange + tight = good.
