You Stay Classy, Gianluigi

In case you were wondering why footballers sometimes make erroneous decisions when it comes to where they play, who they hire, and what they do with their money, Gianiluigi Buffon has an answer: It’s their “women.”

The great sage, you see, seems to think the main reason David Beckham decided to go to LA was because of Posh (he clearly didn’t hear about that whole Tom Cruise thing), and he finds such influence unacceptable. Said Buffon, “I think women of athletes should not influence the most important decisions for our careers. I am lucky, Alena is always happy about my choices.” Yes, he really said that. (And don’t even tell me something was lost in the translation. Translation my ass.) And it sort of makes you see yesterday’s WAG in an entirely different, much sadder light, doesn’t it?

Man, Oddo must be so happy he doesn’t pay with Buffon — imagine the tongue-lashing he’d have gotten in the wake of his little “my ovaries want us to stay in Rome” episode.

  isn’t buffon half french dear…I mean buffon is definitely not an italian name. i’m definitely not his biggest fan or an italy fan for that matter but you gotta love how he stoned zizou on that header in the final…hahahahahahaha stupid angry zizou, he just lost it after that…should never have come out of retirement.

  Oh, thanks, Blob. Fill me with an intense need to go research Buffon. Like I don’t waste enough time on the internet researching my own French players. Players I actually, y’know, like. Because yes, I HAVE wondered about the name Buffon.

  I couldn’t find anything about his French heritage (because Wikipedia only goes back to the parents and Buffon doesn’t interest me enough to check more than one source) BUT I did find this wonderful Buffon quote, which is even more entertaining now that we’ve seen his girlfriend:

  “I would say that I am having less sex now that I’m playing in Serie B – there is more to think about in this division.” — Buffon, as quoted in Football Italia
