A Couple of the Good Ones are Sticking Around
By: Martha | January 24th, 2007
During this time of frenzied transfer rumors and big-name players moving, bellyaching or agitating for changes, it’s particularly nice to see a couple of solid, reliable players quietly re-upping with their current clubs.
Clarence Seedorf who, impossibly, has now been at AC Milan for five years, signed an extension yesterday which will keep him at the club through the end of the 2011 season. Which is awesome — Seedorf is an occasionally magnificent player who provides necessary stability to the Milan midfield. He’s not a hard maniac like Gattuso or a graceful sometime-genius like Kaka, but he keeps the ball, has wonderful vision, and is eminently reliable. Over the past few years, he’s become my favorite Milan player to watch and, even during this difficult season, he’s turned in consistently solid performances while those around them struggle to figure out what the hell is going on. Plus, he’s 30, which at Milan makes him just out of diapers.
On the other side of town, meanwhile, Dejan Stankovic has pledged his proverbial future to Inter. He joined the club from Lazio almost exactly three years ago and, though he’s signed through June 2008, he plans to sign an extension in the next few weeks. It’s impossible for me to present an unbiased opinion about Stankovic because, well, I love him, but he’s awfully good and can play pretty much anywhere in the midfield. What’s not to like?

Personally I think extending Seedorf’s contract for that long is a mistake. When will Galliani learn that players age and as they do so they peak and rapidly fall from grace.
