A Few Surprises in Italy Squad
By: Martha | May 28th, 2007
Showing a stunning lack of respect for Memorial Day here in the US (The nerve!), life is continuing apace in Italy today, and Roberto Donadoni has announced the 23-man squad he’s taking into the upcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers with the Faroe Islands and Lithuania.
Though the squad mostly consists of the usual suspects, there is one debutant — Fiorentina’s Alessandro Gamberini — and a handful who haven’t been around much, like Gamberini’s Viola teammate Manuel Pasqual, Lazio’s Tommaso Rocchi, and Sampdoria’s Fabio Quagliarella and Roma’s Max Tonetto, both of whom were called into camp for the first time for the Scotland match. Additionally, Super Pippo is back, while his equally frustrating Milan teammate Alberto Gilardino is not. Most awesome of all, though, is Donadoni’s confirmation of his commitment to Cristiano Lucarelli, rewarding the striker’s insane production by bringing him into his team for the second time (and first for a competitive match).
Because of the U21 European tournament starting next month, Donadoni didn’t have the option of bringing in deserving Auzzurrini; hopefully next time around he’ll at least get Riccardo Montolivio and Alessandro Rosina into the squad. Are you listening, Roberto?
