A Grumpy Italian Strays Far From Madrid. Supposedly.

By: Martha | November 20th, 2006

What on earth?Well lookie here — another one of those Sightings That Must Mean a Transfer! This time, though, it’s being reported by a slightly more reliable source than Tribal Football, so I suppose it’s at least vaguely possible: Word in the Spanish press is that Mr. Troublepants Cassano has been in Italy over the past few days, having conversations about transfers. Officially, of course, he’s in the country for “personal reasons” — nothing to do with work. (And as opposed to attending a Scientologist wedding. I’m imagining a huge bust-up in training when Beckham hears Cassano was allowed to go to Italy.) Seems logical: Every striker who was just allowed back into training for the first time responds by missing training and a game, right?

As you might expect, everyone and their mother denies both interest in and contact with Cassano. But — and keep this quiet — I think I saw him sneaking around the San Siro the other day. After all, Ancelotti’s pretty much done after this season. So why not roll the dice on a miracle, and bring in an unmanageable still-young striker who also happens to be able to score in bunches? Anyone?
