A New Gig For the Little Inzaghi
By: Martha | August 28th, 2007
These days, you could be forgiven for forgetting that Pippo Inzaghi has a little (and when I say little, I mean he’s a child of 31) brother named Simone who “plays” for Lazio. Just a few years ago, though, Simone was flying high, scoring nine goals in 11 Champions League games (including four in a single match), earning a few Azzurri call-ups, and winning the Scudetto with Lazio in 2000. For a while there, he was king of the pale-blue world, and not just somebody’s kid brother.
In the last few years, though, Inzaghi the Younger has fallen victim to serious injuries and an equally serious drop in form that saw him rarely playing even when he was healthy. Over the past two years (one of which was spent on loan with Sampdoria), he’s appeared in only 17 games and sort of fallen off the general calcio radar.
Now healthy (supposedly), Inzaghi’s apparently been trying to get out of Lazio — where he’s been getting garbage time at best — all summer, though he’s not so desperate that he didn’t reject a loan to Cagliari earlier this month. Despite reports over the weekend that he was wanted in Parma, it now appears he’ll be spending the year on loan at Atalanta. The deal will reportedly earn Lazio a tidy €900,000 in exchange for a guy they weren’t going to use anyway so, assuming Atalanta actually plan to play their new Inzaghi, the deal is lovely for everyone. (Plus, the thought of a tall, delicate Inzaghi playing alongside could-kill-with-his-bare-hands looking Riccardo Zampagna is just mind-blowing enough to be appealing, so there is that, as well.)
