A Quick News Roundup As We Await the Return of Real Football

By: Martha | January 7th, 2008

An unfortunate-looking young man.•Last year, Chelsea were among the clubs tracking Marek Hamsik, but they weren’t willing to pay Brescia price and the Slovak went to Napoli for €5.5 million, where he’s turned in a stellar first half. The 20-year-old has been so impressive, in fact, that Roman Abramovich is supposedly readying a bid of €16 million for his services, just in time to help fill the giant hole being left in Chelsea by the African Cup of Nations.

•Claudio Ranieri (still) thinks Mohamed Sissoko is pretty hot. He is not, however, interested in discussing Sergio Almiron’s future, so don’t ask him about it, alright?

•Word on the entirely unreliable street is that Maniche is having showdown talks with Athletico Madrid today, and that all he wants from life is to join his aging Portuguese friend in Inter’s midfield. We shall see.

•Or, if Inter want someone way younger and less fat, there’s 21-year-old Argie Diego Valeri, who La Gazzetta reported over the weekend is being pimped to the club by none other than Javier Zanetti. He’d cost about €9 million and, if we’re to believe the press, a bid may already be underway. (Thanks to JOHNNY for remind me about this rumor.)

•Goran Pandev is “a Lazio player and money is not all that important.” Not only that, but he’s not had any talks with Bayern (despite copious quotes last week to the contrary), and Lazio say they’ve not talked to anyone about him. Aw! Now, if only there was any truth to this semi-love-fest, and Lazio was actually willing to pay him.

•Here’s a new one: Gianluca Zambrotta is heading back to Italy, but to Juve, not Milan.

•18-year-old Edgar Cani — currently with Serie C1 side Pescara — is being associated with a move to either Inter or Sampdoria. I can’t find out anything about this kid, apart from the fact that he’s a Slovak striker on the verge of securing Italian citizenship, but there you go. Anyone know anything, learn us in the comments. (Given how little he’s played this season, it’s likely any buy would be followed by an immediate loan, but who knows.)

•According to the French press, goal-poor Torino are after one Guillaume Hoarau, Ligue 2’s leading scorer. Go, Toro!

•If Sven Goran-Eriksson is really willing to pay £16 million plus £8.8 million-valued Rolando Bianchi for Mancini, is it save to assume Roma would take the deal?

•Even without oldboy Pato, Porto Alegre managed to beat Inter 2-1 today in the final of the Dubai Cup. (Inter’s goal was scored by Luis Jimenez, who is in such ridiculous form right now that he can even score while lying on his back. Minds out of the gutter, please.)

Martha I am curious to see what Inter do with the midfield. I see Figo wants Maniche but there are so many names being linked. Apparently Zanetti has praised a young argentine to come to Inter. And we know how Inter feels about players from Argentina. The name is Diego Valeri. Do you know anything about him?

Ach, I had that window open and meant to include that story — thanks for the reminder, JOHNNY, I’ll add it in. I don’t know much about him, but what I’ve heard is amazing (and he’s waaaay younger and cheaper than any of the other names breing floated), and if Zanetti is pushing him it’s likely the club will give him a serious look.

(Also, FWIW, I don’t think Figo’s said he wants him — he’s said something like “he’s a good teammate” when asked about his name, but the headlines are pretty misleading, based on the quotes I’ve seen.)

Martha, is there a single Inter-player you wouldn’t want to be doing the beast with two backs with?

Steven, I resent your implication — there are tons. (Crespo. And Cambiasso. And Suazo. Oh, god, and Chivu.)

Beware of Figo’s bearing gifts! Maniche is a cancer in the dressing room.

Valeri was a standout for Lanus in their shocking title win in Argentina’s recently completed Apertura. He also played with Zanetti in a friendly over the holiday period, which is what really gave impetus to the rumours. It is very likely to be a summer deal, though.

You need to see the Maniche signing (which is supposed to become official today) in the context of all the injuries. And if he turns out to be an Ibra-like “cancer in the dressing room” than the Nerazzuri part of the country will be quite pleased.

Lucarelli is on the verge of signing with Parma: reportedly a loan/option to buy deal structured as follows: Parma will pay Euro 2 million of Lucarelli’s salary for the second half of the season and Euro 4 million for the right to buy his registration at season’s end.

Good point re Maniche, ursus — we can only hope he’s just that cancerous. (And the Lucarelli bit is coming later today!)

F-Zambro! We don’t want traitors on our team. Why the hell would we want a gutless crybaby back on our team?

Besides, do we really think he’ll survive the beating Nedved would give him if he ever steps foot into the Juve dressing room?

You know he couldn’t JOHNNY — Zambro would swing and miss by a foot, and Nedved would go down, clutching his knee. Fight over.

Martha that is too funny. I didn’t think he could either.

Looks like Maniche to Inter may not be a done deal after all. Word this morning is that Vieira and Stankovic are making better progress in their recovery from injury than previously anticipated, and that this development has cooled Inter’s interest in Maniche. Final decision now said to be made next week.

Stankovic’s been back in full training since the second day in Dubai, but it makes me nervous to count on him right now — this is, what, the third time he’s gotten to this point this season? How do they know his heel problem won’t be back in a week? (And don’t even get me started on Vieira. God.)

Edgar Cani is not Slovak, he is an Albanian Striker, 191 tall, born in the capital of Albania, Tirana, and he has said that he will play for the Albanian Natioan Team, when he is called, which shouldnt be too distant from now.

Currently he plays for Pescara in C1A, third division in italy, and he has been followed by Inter and Sampdoria mainly. In an interview he has said that Inter and Sampdoria were the two teams that want to get him during the January transfer, but hes club wants to sell him in the summer.

There are plenty of other teams interested in him, including Genoa, and almost all Serie B teams, but as i said only Inter and Sampdoria have sent their agents to Pescara.

Edgar is considered by the italian press to be the next Christian Vieri, he is a very strong striker, and shows good composure in front of the net.

At 17 last year, he was not allowed to make his debut with Pescara in Serie B, due to some federation issues. If he did, then he probably would have been playing in Serie A this year!

He will get his Italian Citizenship soon, so other big teams from other countries are starting to get interested in this kid. He currently only has a youth contract with Pescara, and will be extremly cheap to buy for any of the teams!

The Italian media has called him the next Bobo Vieri, i havent seen the kid play, obviously im in canada, theres no chance in hell i can watch the C1A, but the Italian Media praise him a lot. I hope for the sake of my national team, he is that good, or becomes that good, and doesnt play for the Italian National Team.
