Silence, Or: What is the Sound of a Domestic Cup Game?

By: Martha | November 9th, 2006

Super PippoWithout digging, you wouldn’t even know that six games were played in the Coppa Italia (AKA the TIM Cup) yesterday, despite the fact that a whole bunch of Serie A teams were involved. Of course, things would have been very different had Milan not managed to dig their way out from under the 2-0 home deficit they faced at halftime of their game with second division Brescia. Needless to say Milan were, like everyone else, playing a team that included very few regulars, but still — at this point, a loss for them is a loss, even if the U-12s are on the pitch. So Ancelotti threw away his “We’re a top club, we can win Cup games without even waking our first team up!” pride and introduced Super Pippo after the break. Though he didn’t score until late, Inzaghi’s proverbial liveliness apparently made all the difference, and Milan ended up with a comfortable 4-2 victory. Barring disaster (this is Milan we’re talking about), they should feel pretty comfortable heading into the second leg at Brescia at the end of the month.

The other results, which included no real surprises, are as follows:

Sampdori 1 - 0 Palermo (Sigh.)
Empoli 1 - 0 Napoli
Arezzo 2 - 1 Livorno (Yes, that’s a Serie B team beating a Serie A side. We’ll see what happens in the second leg, though.)
Triestina 1 - 2 Roma
Reggina 2 - 2 Chievo

I love how all the coaches pay the Cup lip service, but then when they name their teams, you can’t even recognize half the players. I completely forgot that Marco Borriello went to Milan over the summer.

On a side note, my parents were at the Palermo airport yesterday and ran into the whole Palermo team! Unfortunately they had just checked my new Di Michele shirt, so no autographs, but they got to meet them, Guidolin included.
