Trouble in Milan, Or: Ah, Crap. Madini’s Crocked.
By: Martha | March 12th, 2007
Paolo Maldini is hurt again, and I sort of feel like it might be partially my fault for jinxing him.
On Saturday, you may recall, I was all excited about the possibility that he’d be around for a special bonus year that I left out the part of the quote about how he’d only want to stay if he was on “the big stage.” Which, presumably, means being a regular in the team. I overlooked that part on the obvious assumption that there’s always room for a Maldini, but it didn’t occur to me that his body breaking down might be a reason he couldn’t play regularly.
I mean, the man went, what, almost 20 years without suffering a major injury, right? He was was the picture of health, until the calendar caught up with him, the poor old man. And now, just as he’s back to full fitness? The problems with his left knee — specifically his mangled meniscus — have become so severe all of a sudden that he’s likely to require an operation that will keep him out for six weeks. Six weeks! That’s what he gets, clearly, for daring to describe his knees as “working again” over the weekend. Sigh.
For the sake of Serie A, I just hope this doesn’t turn into the injury that finally forces Maldini to admit he’s through. We need to have him around for a little longer.
Edit: The Milan website claims Maldini’s knee hurts but that MRI was “was substantially negative” (whatever that means), and that “the idea of a knee operation is not being considered for the moment.” Fingers crossed that’s a)true, and b)will stay that way.

Not your fault. He obviously didn’t knock on wood when he made that statement about his knees on Saturday. But now my dream old man back line is at risk.
Christian, ready for that call up?

I think it’s definitely your fault.
