Adriano Might Think About Becoming Czech
By: Martha | March 27th, 2007This actually went down yesterday, but it’s so awesome that I believe it needs its own post: The Czech national team partied so hard over the weekend that they were fined by their own football federation. The occasion? The 29th birthday of Fiorentina defender (and possibly the most quietly consistent player on earth these days) Tomas Ujfalusi. Aw yeah! Now this is something even Adriano could get behind, right?
Details are disappointingly slim on what actually went down, but Ujfalusi, Tomas Rosicky, Jan Polak, Martin Jiranek and Marek Cech were all reportedly in a room at the team hotel until 530am, presumably doing more than talking tactics and watching porn. Whatever happened, it was shocking enough for the Czech Soccer Union to levy a one-million-crown fine on the whole team (I hope the people who weren’t invited complain about paying their share) and condemn the event as one “which does not fall in line with the behaviour of Czech Republic national team members.” It also couldn’t have helped that the team lost to Germany earlier that day, and probably should have been sitting around feeling like crap rather than boozing it up.
The harshest condemnation, however, came from Czech coach Karel Brueckner, who confessed to the press that he considered resigning in the wake of the festivities, calling the party “the worst disciplinary offense he had experienced.” Well, damn! That must have been one hell of a blowout.
Edit: Hookers? Possibly? Hands up, who thinks Ujfalusi himself started that rumor, hoping to distract from the fact that five manly men were alone in a room until all hours, doing God knows what?

At least it was Marek and not Petr Cech at the party - hate to think the best goalkeeper in Europe would have to pay for his women.
