After Last Weekend, Barca No Longer Want Dida
By: Martha | March 6th, 2007
Ok, they didn’t say that, I did. But you’ll notice that last month, when the Dida-to-Barca rumor surfaced, all was quiet in Spain — no denials, no confirmations, no nothing. Now, though, right after the keeper commits several hideous errors against Chievo, everyone at the Nou Camp suddenly wakes up and starts to issue very stern denials. And these aren’t your typical “No talks have taken place” half-truths that we hear when clubs are clearly interested in a player, these denials are of the “Oh hells, no!” variety. Coincidence? I think not.
Milan, for their part, are continuing to move ahead on the assumption that Dida will be gone this summer — his destination doesn’t matter to them, they just need a keeper. Step one was yesterday’s signing of Aussie backup Celjko Kalac to a contract extension that ties him to the club either until he dies of old age or summer 2009, whichever once comes first. Step two, obviously, is the continued search for a starter, and today’s rumored target (alongside the ever-present Gigi Buffon, of course) is PSV Eindhoven’s Heurelho Gomes. The Brazilian, who recently won his first call-up into the national team, could reportedly be let go for around £5million, despite his long-term contract with PSV.
Since he’s both younger than Dida and will likely cost less than the Milan keeper will demand, Gomes doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility — could be an actual, legit target here.
