All Hail Lucarelli, Or: That Sacking Was Just a Little Joke
By: Martha | January 16th, 2007
Last night I reported on the post-match firing of Livorno manager Daniele Arrigoni, and the subsequent player appeals — lead by Cristiano Lucarelli, who is beyond beloved at the club — for the decision to be reversed. The whole thing seemed a bit pie-in-the-sky, until you considered the power of fan groups in Italy, and Lacarelli’s close connection with some of Livorno’s ultras. If he’s voicing the will of the players AND the powerful fans, you never really know what could happen.
And today? Well, Arrigoni has his job back. Funny how that worked out. According to volatile club president Aldo Spinelli (the man who did the firing, and then ripped into goalkeeper Marco Amelia when he voice support for Arrigoni), his decision was reversed because the board “analyzed the situation and [the players] have accepted part of the blame for what happened against Atalanta.” Because, you know, without being told, he’d never have known the people on the pitch had something do with a 5-1 thrashing.
