All Hell is Breaking Loose at the Viareggio

By: Martha | February 12th, 2007

See ya, punk.A game in the Viareggio youth tournament was actually the first football played after the riot in Catania — apparently the powers that be thought kids’ games would go off without a hitch. Ha, I say. HA!

Get this: A match today between youth teams from Genoa and Argentine side Real Arroyo Seco was suspend after one of the Real Arrojo players punched the referee. Yes, that happened. And it gets weirder — the kid hit the ref after the man sent off five (!) players, and had suspended the game because they weren’t enough people left on the pitch. God only knows what happened during the game, but it must have been pretty bad because the entire Real Arrojo team ended up being hauled off to a nearby police station “for identification.” Yikes.

In other Viareggio news, six players from Senegal disappeared from their team hotel over the weekend. Why did they leave? Are they lost? Is Senegal the new Cuba? Wikipedia says “Senegal has a reputation for transparency in government operations … Today Senegal has a democratic political culture, being part of one of the most successful democratic transitions in Africa.” Why would they be running away? Needless to say, I’m going to be worrying about this until I get an update, so any help would be appreciated.

[Yes, I know: Zidane has nothing to do with this story. But there's a red card in the picture, and you have no idea how hard it is to find images of the Viareggio tournament in action. It was all I could come up with, sorry.]

    Regarding the picture:

I actually didn’t even notice Zidane. I just looked at the red card, and thought this was the pic from the match you mentioned.
When I saw your footnote, I was ROFL!!!

Personally, any excuse to get more Zidane pictures up and about on the web is okay by me!
