Amauri’s Agent Starts Rumors, Hopes They Result in Money
By: Martha | May 8th, 2007
In an exclusive interview inexplicably given to Goal.com, Mariano Grimaldi, the agent of Palermo’s broken Brazilian Amauri, talked rather smugly of the zillions of HUGE clubs who are desperate to sign his client.
According to Grimaldi — who took pains to emphasize Amauri’s happiness with the Rosaneri, and the glory of his current four-year deal with the club — Liverpool and Rafa Benitez are (allegedly) particularly in love with the striker, but would only take steps to sign him if he ends up with an EU passport (which would obviously happen if he got that Italian citizenship). I say “allegedly” here because Grimaldi claims Benitez — who has made no secret of his affection for the striker — called Amauri the “best striker in Europe” who isn’t Didier Drogba. And, really, how likely is that? No matter how productive Amauri was for the first half of this season, that was only a few insane months, and he needs to a)heal, and b)do a bit more before he’s in the running for “best” anything. Benitez may be Spanish, but he’s not crazy — there’s no way he said that.
Also interested in Amauri, according to Grimaldi, are Inter, Juventus, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Roma — quite a pile of suitors for the man, right? Either that or it’s just a list of big names Grimaldi is using to try to create some offers. I don’t know about you, but my money is on the latter — it would shock me if any of those clubs were willing to risk €20 million (the price Grimaldi claims Palermo would ask) on a guy who just did his knee and hasn’t kicked a ball in anger since Christmas.
