An Arsenal Inside the Stadium? Fan-Freaking-Tastic.
By: Martha | February 6th, 2007
According to Roman blogger Spangly Princess (who, despite her decidedly non-footballing name, is doing a fantastic job of covering the fallout from last Friday’s events), police have found a massive stockpile of hand-to-hand weaponry stored inside Catania’s Stadio Angelo Massimino. Among the items found were baseball bats and “metal objects,” obviously intended for use in just the sort of encounter that lead to Filippo Raciti’s death. At the very least, the stadium’s caretaker knew the stockpile was there — he tried to protect it from police by releasing his dogs on them, a ploy that failed to do anything more than get him arrested. So, just in case you we needed further proof that the clubs let the Ultras run wild, there it is. If those ties aren’t forcibly cut, nothing will ever change.
In addition to the apparent collusion between Catania and the Ultras, police have also found evidence of ties between Catania Ultras and Forza Nuova, a large neo-Fascist group in Italy “specially dedicated to recruiting teenagers and young men and which has a record of infiltrating ultras groups.” As the Spangly Princess says, surprise, surprise. Fascists and Ultras, acting in concert? I’m stunned. Stunned, I tell you.
