Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli’s long-discussed (and well-deserved) contract extension was confirmed this weekend, and he’s now tied to the club through 2011. Though it’s only the very rare managers and clubs who have the ability, intelligence and patience to see long contacts to their ends, Prandelli certainly deserves a shot. After taking the Viola to a (later lost) Champions League spot last season, he was voted Manager of the Year, and this year worked an arguably even greater miracle by taking his team from -15 to fifth in the table; it’s nice to see at least one team appreciating what it has, and not dumping a faithful servant in persuit of Bigger! and Better! or pulling the fire alarm in horrified anticipation of player departures. (What if, say, Palermo were dealing with the upcoming departure of a player as significant as Luca Toni. Can you even imagine the panic?)
And, speaking of loyalty, Chievo’s awesome Gigi del Neri has publicly confirmed his desire to say with the club no matter where they play next year. (This despite the fact that the job is trying to kill him.) Though he’s had a lot of very short-term (some ending before the start of the season) jobs since his miraculous first tenure in Verona, both the club’s ownership and its fanbase have faith in him despite Chievo’s current struggles, and both seem happy with the idea of seeing him on the bench next season, whether it’s in Serie A or Serie B.
