And Now It’s Inter’s and Roma’s Turn

By: Martha | September 19th, 2007

Whee, training!Inter go into today’s match at Fenerbahçe with a laughably thin defense, though the last-minute recovery of Walter Samuel looks likely to save them from having to play Esteban Cambiasso at centerback. (Shockingly, the Turkish club expects to be able to find space into which to attack. You don’t say.) Apart from that potential debacle, the media’s attention ahead of the clash has been on the wonderful Zlatan, who hasn’t scored in Europe for almost two years but will doubtless correct that situation in no time once the match kicks off. The Swede is getting all sorts of love, not only from his own manager — who calls him the best striker in the world — but also from Fenerbahçe’s boss, Brazilian legend Zico, who loves Ibra so much he is keeping a tape of that sick goal against Nac to show to his kids, just to let them know how it’s done.

Issues at the back aside, in the face of Fenerbahçe’s struggling start to the season and the club’s difficulties in Europe (even at home), Inter have to be considered favorites in the match. Hopefully Zlatan can score enough to keep them ahead of whatever the sieve of a backline lets in.

In the other game featuring an Italian club, meanwhile, a mostly full-strength Roma side host Dynamo Kyiv, the team they “lost” to in the match that was abandoned three years ago when a well-behave Roma fan threw something that made Anders Frisk bleed like a stuck pig. Chris has a full match preview over here but, in sum, Roma are on fire while Dynamo’s form has been off this season, and they were dire in the Champions League last year; the Ukrainians will be thrilled to bits to leave Rome with a point tonight. (Or will they? Daniel De Rossi says Dynamo will be “up for it,” so look out, people.)

This is the same crap CL start they had last year. The thing, I don’t think playing well is THAT far off, but what is bound to happen is utter panic, which will screw things up beyond repair, and you’ll spend all season roaring with evil laughter.
