Another Day, Another Scandal
By: Martha | January 18th, 2007
Yawn. I’m sorry, what’s that? Another scandal in Italian football? No!
I’m sure you are as shocked as I am to hear that yet another investigation is currently underway, this time into possible accounting irregularities on the books of both Inter and Milan. (Investigations are ongoing into similar issues at Roma and Lazio.) According to press reports yesterday, the issue at hand is the possible over-valuing of transfered players, a trick that has long been utilized in Italy to keep teams in the black — on paper, anyway. Why authorities have chosen this moment to start investigating the practice is anyone’s guess because if I know about it, everyone does, and as has for years.
The transfers in question took place between the two Milan clubs at the end of the 2002-2003 season — none of the players ever played for either team, and instead were sent to lower divisions. Which, in my understanding, is how this sort of thing always works, so probably every major club could be brought up under these charges. If, you know, some maniac got a wild hair and wanted to do something outrageous like, I don’t know, clean up the game or something. (Inert wild laughter here.)
