Ascoli Bring in a Fixer to Save Their Season
By: Martha | November 14th, 2006
Just a day after dumping manager Attilio Tesser and putting his assistant Mark Strukelj in charge, Ascoli have brought in Nedo Sonetti in a bid to stay in Serie A. Sonetti, who joined Cagliari almost exactly a year ago as their fourth manager in just a few months successfully saved that club before leaving over the summer; Ascoli president Roberto Benigni surely hopes the old man (at 65, he’s apparently the second-oldest manager in Serie A) will be able to work his magic this year, as well. Sonetti has been at the club before, successfully guiding them to promotion during the 1990-1991 season, and has a long history of being hired mid-season to rescue teams in deep, dark, winless holes.
From what I can tell from this article in La Gazzatta dello Sport, Sonetti was Ascoli’s first choice (albeit as their second manager of the season). He’s very fired up about the gig (”my life is made of enthusiasm”) and, while cautious about playing Fiorentina, wants belief from the players that they can stay up. Basically, then, he’s saying the same things as any other replacement manager, except in Italian. There does, however, appear to be some issue about the squad size. The barely intelligible web-tool translation I read makes it sound like Tesser was training daily with 30 players, and that Sonetti plans to slash that number over the next few weeks. Hmm. At a smaller club like Ascoli, does that mean pink slips?
