Ascoli President, Assorted Women Threatened with Something, Or: OK, Who Speaks Italian?
By: Martha | November 16th, 2006
I can’t find any reports of this story in the English-language press, but it sounds as if a small group of irate Ultras (and, really, is there any other kind?) gathered outside the home of the Ascoli president Roberto Benigini* last night and raised a little bit of hell. The traslationbot interpretation of the headline is lurid indeed: Ascoli, threats of dead women. I mean, could anything be more juicy and giddily horrible? The body of the story, however, is frustratingly vague, and the words “women” and “dead” hardly appearing at all. As far as I can tell, the dozen or so fans shouted threats and displayed one “seriously offensive banner.” Pictures of dead women? The phrase “Women! All dead!”? A text-based threat to off Benigni’s wife/girlfriend? No freaking idea. (Perhaps the vagueness has something to do with that press strike.) Benigni has been threatened in the recent past, too, and apparently has gone to the cops with “pamphlets” that somehow involved these elusive dead woman. Sigh.
Whatever the hell is going on, things are not good at Ascoli — not having a win 11 games into the season tends to do that to a club. I have a feeling, though, that this story would be much less intriguing if we could, you know, actually understand what it was about. Italian speakers? Anyone? Please help.
*Having finally seen a photo of the man, I can say with absolute certainty that he is definitely not the actor of the same name. Pity.
