Ascoli: Without a Win or a Manager
By: Martha | November 13th, 2006
Well, whoever had Ascoli’s Attilio Tesser in the First to be Sacked Once the Season Finally Starts pool is feeling pretty smart today — it seems 11 games without a win was too much for the club’s ownership, and they’ve let Tesser go. Needless to say, the sacking comes minutes after club president Roberto Benigni* announced that Tesser would keep his job through the end of the season. (Ah, the dreaded vote of confidence.) Looking on the bright side, this gig lasted 10 games longer than Tesser survived with Cagliari last year, so he’s making progress: At this rate, next year he’ll make it past the midpoint of the season.
No word yet on who will replace him; assistant manager Mark Strukelj is in charge for the moment. Meantime, you know the English FA has people on the phone with Benigni, singing the praises of one Sven-Goran Eriksson. If they can get him a job — any job — they’ll save £1300/day.
*Wait, the actor Roberto Benigni?! Seriously?
