Azzurri Headed to MLS?

By: Martha | April 6th, 2007

Del PieroFormer US footballer and one-time play-by-play man Glenn Davis hosts a regular show on a Texas radio station, the credibility of which I don’t know a ton about. I listened to it once before (when John Harkes was on, talking about how great he is and spewing meaningless sound bytes about RBNY) and he had fairly high-profile guests and knowledgeable callers, if nothing else. So, at the top of yesterday’s show, right after talking about how he thinks the Houston Dynamo should play this season, he dropped the little bombshell that “a source very close to me” (Uh … is that supposed to make us feel better?) reported that Matrix, Del Piero, and Canna have all made overtures to MLS about joining the league. WHA??!

Davis repeatedly described the source as “reputable,” and I frankly can’t imagine that he’d make something like that up and throw it out there — even the little bit of press it could bring wouldn’t be worth the damage a blatant untruth would do to his reputation. And honestly, I can see Del Piero looking over here as a place to end career up: He’d likely score a ton of goals and could make some money, since the league would be insane not to want to bring him in. The other two, though, I have a harder time believing. Matrix?! Why would he uproot his family to come get booed in a lesser league? And why would Canna want to come here, of all people?! Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have him in MLS (with RBNY, please), but I just don’t really see what’s in it for him. Less pressure, maybe? The freedom to walk around and not have anyone know who you are? Would playing in MLS would be worth that?

[Thank to du Nord for reporting the story and pointing me to the radio show.]

Good god, you made my head explode with that headline/photo combination. Ok, I’m better now. And I’m with you- Del Piero in MLS I could maybe see, but Cannavaro? He has talked in the past about his desire to end his career back home in Naples, and I can’t see what MLS has to tempt him. And I don’t get why Matrix would want to be anywhere other than where he is right now.

Other than making me weep with joy, I have to agree that there is no advantage to Canna coming to MLS. Napoli is the place he needs to finish his career.

But if he does come to the US, DC United should be his destination. I promise I would make sure he didn’t pass unnoticed through the streets of our nation’s capital.

A lot of players are making overtures after they saw the money Beckham got. The fact is that they won’t be getting anywhere near that if they come to MLS so it is unlikely that they ever will. It is fun to dream about though…

The Fire are always rumored to be “very interested” in European stars who, frankly, are on the decline. That said, on the decline in Italy would still mean tons of goals in MLS for a guy like Del Piero. I’d love that.

Canna and Matrix? No way. I don’t see international stars who are defenders really being a sell for a league trying to put people in the seats when, lets face it, Americans only want to see goals.

Muddia, I think you’re right about defenders in general, but Matrix is one of the few players with name recognition over here thanks to my buddy Zizou. So him I could kind of see. Except that the money’s not there.

(Although wouldn’t it be fun to see Zidane and Materazzi both playing in MLS?)

Canna and Matrix I don’t think will come, but Please please please… it would be great if Del Piero came!

But Bob’s right, if they can’t use them for Marketing (i.e. they can’t speak English, nobody knows them) they won’t get that much money!

no way will Del Piero come over here as much as I would love that. he’s already being groomed for management over at the Old Lady. and Matrix I don’t see coming here and he’s really only (to many non footie fans) as the guy who got head-butted. and Canna yeah not likely either. so the MLS will throw out tidbts like that to get us excited about the MLS. stop with the rumors and buzz words and actually show the matches on tv like ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, hell even WGN. instead of like golf or nascar and people might get excited about the MLS.

For what it is worth, I know Del Piero is tight with Noel Gallagher (who barely speaks English himself but certainly no Italian). Maybe DP does speak decent English.

Well, yeah, I’ve seen DP speak a little English, but people don’t know who he is.
Matrix is not so much remembered either, even with the WC incident.
