Azzurrini Crush Azerbaijan
By: Martha | November 16th, 2007
Not even bothering to score until I turned the game on with just over five minutes left in the first half, the Azzurrini went goal-crazy tonight, putting five past a very poor Azerbaijan side and keeping their fantastic record in Euro 2009 qualifying.
Playing without the injured Giuseppe Rossi and Marco Rossi, the U-21s had no trouble whatsoever with their opponents, a team whose defending made it very clear why they’ve now managed only one point from six qualifying games. Juve pocket rocket Sebastian Giovinco (currently on loan with Empoli), too, noticed the dreadful defending and cut it open effortlessly, creating four of his team’s goals (the other was scored by an Azerbaijani defender), and also putting Robert Acquafresca through alone only to have him hit the bar with a chip just before the half.
The Azzurini went into halftime up 2-0 thanks to the own goal and a late one from Acquafresca, and then were stymied until the 77th minute when the real onslaught began: Roma-owned debutant Alessio Cerci, currently busy blowing doors off Serie B with Pisa, who started at striker and played the whole match, marked his first appearance with a wonderfully cool finish. His goal was follow rapidly by one by Andrea Russotto, who was in the right place at the right time to pounce on a deflected shot, and another from Daniele Dessena, who scored Italy’s fifth in injury time. In addition the goalfest, Cerci’s fellow debutant, Fiorentina’s Daniel Pablo Osvaldo, made an appearance and played well in his 30 minutes on the pitch. He put Giovinco through just after coming on, and was unlucky not to score with a couple of good chances, one of which he created for himself.
Think this team is confident now? I don’t care how terrible Azerbaijan’s defending was, the conditions were bad (wet, cold, and slow) and Giovinco and friends still made them look like a park league team at times — the baby Italians looked really, really good.

Today Daniele Dessena showed why he’s such a highly rated young talent. He was all over the pitch. He can defend, tackle, attack, score, he’s truly a complete midfielder.
Cigarini played well also, and Cerci made a good debut.
De Ceglie was excellent on the left wing.
Of course, the praise has to go to Sebastian Giovinco. The little guy is amazing. He forms a great partnership with Acquafresca as well.

If ever there’s a sign for future greatness it’s the Alonzo Mourning vein in the dome. I wasn’t sold, now I am. It’s all about the vein.
Although clearly Gio’s is much straighter and without the squigglies. Which means he won’t be very adept at jumping high and blocking shots - not that being 3′7 has anything to do with that.

Is it me or does Sebastian Giovinco remind you a little bit of another rather on the short side player…I’m talking about Cannavaro. I was watching and I’m like holly fudge doesn’t he look like canna? I don’t know about you but he does to me. I didn’t really get to watch the game because I had to watch little bear with my little brother. I learned how to get rid of hiccups though. I’m glad that they won at least and they thrashed the crap outta them.

I’m starting to fall in love with this Giovinco guy. He never struck my eye in Juve’s Serie B campaign (then again, he only played 3 games) but now I stand fu**ing corrected.
Along with Paolo De Ceglie, Juve’s (and the Azzurri’s future) is looking bright.
