Beating Inter Brought Roma More Than Just Love
By: Martha | April 20th, 2007
Given how many people hate Inter (winning + massive club + getting the Scudetto without playing = evil, clearly), it’s no surprise their nearly season-long undefeated run was a source of anger for many. In an effort to persuade someone — Anyone! — to beat them and end the streak, Catersport, an RAI2 radio show, started taking pledges of material goods they would collect and deliver to Inter’s eventual conqueror. The final list of goods, collected over the months and infuriating months Inter’s dominance, is impressive indeed and includes (among many other things) the following:
•11 boxes of oranges
•100 kg of top quality plaster
•11 ricotta soufflés
•13 shiatsu treatments
•one sculpture of a head mounted on a plinth (Nice!)
•one CD with specially composed original soundtrack for each player
•one pair of sausages per person
•12 ski lessons
•25% discount on materials for building a high-tech villa
•12 snakeskin belts
•Five books per head for the starting 11
•Two rolls of waterproof asphalt (roofing material) per player
As our favorite Rome blogger Spangly Princess (from whom all this information comes) points out, the great thing about this list isn’t the evidence it provides that everyone wants Inter to lose, but rather the things that are one it — most of these are obviously from tradesmen offering whatever goods or services they have, rather than high-rollers offering luxury weekends in the hope of getting good PR. The bounty is so wonderfully personal, it provides us outsiders a welcome counterpoint to the unrelenting “Calcio’s is a culture of violence and corruption” message we’ve been getting for the past several months, and reminds us a lot of normal people just love their teams (and/or despite Inter).

I love the notion of a “pair of sausages”. Classic.
I still think I’d go with 100 kg of top quality plaster or two rolls of waterproof asphalt though.

Although my favorite team is AC Milan, and therefore everyone says I HAVE to hate Inter, I don’t.
But when a team wins a lot of games in a row, sometimes it’s good for them to be slowed down for a while.

glad you enjoyed the story Martha. am keeping an eye out for feedback from the players… I’m especially keen to know what Totti is going to DO with his books…

HHHAA!!! I love it, SP — even Roma diehards question Totti’s brainpower, huh? Perhaps he’s got a table that needs propping up …
(And I’ll be reading you religiously for the feedback from the team, that’ll be the best part of the whole deal.)
