Cagliari, Torino Sack Bosses: Should be All Wins From Here on Out, Right?
By: Martha | February 26th, 2007
Because they both lost this weekend and ownership felt like they had to do something, both Cagliari’s Franco Colomba and Torino’s Alberto Zaccheroni were fired today. Cagliari’s loss to Lazio left them just three points clear of the drop zone, while Torino are a point behind them and in very serious danger.
Quite logically, Zaccheroni is being replaced by Gianni De Biasi, the man who should have had the job in the first place, since he guided Torino into Serie A last season. However, rather than the knighthood he deserved for making Torino the only Turin-based team in Serie A for the first time ever, he got into some sort of dispute with the club and was let go three days before the start season. Which is odd, since Calcio Italia’s season preview specifically mentioned his closeness to President Urbano Cairo — wonder what the hell happened there. Whatever the reason for his depature, this is a great chance for De Biasi — the fans love him, and if he comes in and rescues the club, he’ll get that knighthood for sure.
Cagliari, meanwhile, also appointed a familiar replacement: They bought in Marco Giampaolo, who was sacked by the club just two month ago. Apparently the 16 points he got from his 16 games in charge were better than the seven Colomba managed to bring in from … seven games. Hmm. Wonder what sort of math they do in Cagliari.
