Cagliari Ain’t Goin’ Down Just Yet
By: chris | March 26th, 2008
Well well well, what a difference a month can make. At the end of February, the Sardinians had already put a deposit down on their one year lease (with an option for longer) in Serie B, and had the FIGC rub a mixture of salt, alcohol and thumbtacks into their open wounds with a three point penalty for some sort of legal bullshit (they’d sued a former player for libel without the proper thumbs up from The Powers That Be.)
One month later they’re en fuego in the league (relatively) and have won three out of their last five with wins against non-slouches Atalanta, Torino and Genoa. And now the cherry on top of the creamy vanilla sundae: they’re getting their three points back. The big wigs bigger than the FIGC, the Federal Court of Justice, has decided that Cagliari’s appeal was worthy of a reversal of fortunes.
With the returned three points, Cagliari is still in the relegation zone, but only on goal differential - just 3 goals behind Livorno. The distinction of low club on the totem poll now goes to Empoli, and the new bottom of the table looks a little something like this:
15. Parma 29 (-12) @ Juventus
16. Catania 29 (-12) Torino
17. Livorno 28 (-16) Siena
18. Cagliari 28 (-19) Roma
19. Reggina 27 (-16) @ Genoa
20. Empoli 26 (-19) Sampdoria
For a team whose confidence must be increasing by the week, this must send them soaring, and now they must believe they can truly - and somewhat magically, considering they’re playing in Serie A with a Serie B roster - beat the drop this year. Of course, they’re being rudely greeted with Roma this weekend and a trip to the San Siro to face the Rossoneri next weekend - just to make sure they don’t get too euphoric. But at the very least, the relegation fight for the neutral observer in calcio becomes much more exciting.

I’m glad for Cagliari now that they get their three points back.

Who says Serie A is boring and predictable.
There are good races all over the table.
We have a serious Scudetto race going on.
We have a a gritty battle from 4th to 7th
We have a releagation battle where 14th and 20th are spearated by just 5 points.Should be a hell of a remaining 8 games. A lot of teams have a lot to play for!

i definitely don’t want to see cagliari get relegated, i would hate for the whole island of sardinia to be deprived serie a football. 2 teams that wouldn’t bother me being relegated are livorno and empoli
