New Coach (Same As the Old Coach) For Cagliari

By: Martha | December 19th, 2007

Nedo needs a hug.Given how utterly suicidal Nedo Sonetti looked, standing on the touchline in the rain during Cagliari’s home loss the Inter on Sunday, it’s no surprise that he’s resigned as coach. Sonetti’s been a short-term manager most of his career — he’s been in charge of 25 clubs now, and most of his stints have been for shorter than a season, so being a mid-season replacement (or, erm, giving way to one) truly is his thing. If the Cagliari gig is too much for him, it must be really, really bad.

Channel 4 reported last week that owner Massimo Cellino had actually called Marco Giampaolo — who he sacked almost exactly a month ago — and asked him to come back, but that, after going through the whole sacking-and-recall thing last season, Giampaolo turned him down. Now, though, they’ve either filled him with hallucinogenic drugs or offered to pay him so much he couldn’t say no, because the club’s website has announced that he’s on his way back yet again. (Giampaolo, however, has apparently not yet agreed to be recalled. Oh, lord.)

Alright, that’s it: Francesco Guildolin and Giampaolo, if he takes the gig, need a support group. If I could speak Italian, I’d run it, because someone needs to get these guys help — there’s only so long you can feel sorry for them if they keep crawling back to the crazy owners, only to be fired again.

Okay, that picture is just calculated to fill a body with woe. Poor Sonetti looks like a leper.

Nothing compared to what Giampaolo’s about to feel, of course.

He looked like that the WHOLE MATCH, too. It was as if he was trying to fix everything in those 90 minutes, the poor man. (And so far, Giampaolo is digging in his heels and talking about dignity. (!) We shall see.)

I’ve come to the conclusion that Cellino is worse than Zamparini. Good for Giampaolo that he’s not going back, Cellino is a nut.

Cagliari are in a severe crisis and look all but destined for Serie B. The fans are contesting Cellino every game (Cellino Vattene! signs are showing up), and the situation is just getting worst. What used to be a such a great club is becoming a circus. Have you ever seen the stadium? Cellino was too cheap to build a new one so he built stands on the running track. That’s right, they play in a stadium located in a stadium. Unless this guy leaves Cagliari will never have success again.

Francesco, aren’t those stands TEMPORARY, too? It’s just shameful, you’re right.

(And we’re in the midst of getting a Cagliari blog set up for Jeremy, so we’ll get to hear about the agony on a regular basis.)

I can’t speak for Francesco, Steven, but I bash Zampa with love. Seriously!

Anyone know why all the coaches were sporting those lime green scarves this past weekend?

I don’t know what the cause was, Tim, but they do it once every season — it’s some sort of a benefit. (The guys on Domenica Sportiva were wearing them, too.)

What? Milan missed the chance to be in on a TV benefit thing? They’ll be so pissed, man!
