

Calcio Quiz – The Answers

Last week I posted the Calcio Quiz. I know I originally said I would post the answers on Wednesday, but nobody has really tried to answer since Thursday so I’ll go ahead and unveil the answers today. I hope the quiz was challenging, and maybe I’ll post more editions of the Calcio Quiz in the future if I can think up 50 more questions! Ok so answers after the jump.
1) Name two clubs that have won a Scudetto and are now playing in divisions below Serie B.
Possible answers for this were: Pro Vercelli (7 time winners), A.S. Casale Calcio (1 win in 1914), U.S.D. Novese (1 win in 1922), Hellas Verona (1 win in 1985), and I would’ve accepted Spezia Calcio, who won the Scudetto during World War II but it was not recognized by the FIGC until 2002.
2) Before the first official Serie A was formed in 1929, how was a club crowned “Campioni D’Italia”
Before their was an official Serie A, their were regional divisions throughout Italy and the winners of these regional leagues would then play-off against each other to see who the winner was.
3) Besides Fiorentina, name another Italian team that wears purple.
The only other Italian team that wears purple is A.C. Legnano, who are currently in the Lega Pro Second Division. There may be other teams in the amateur leagues, but to track that down would take a lot of time.
4) Name a set of brothers currently playing in Italian football.
There are many possible answers for this: Antonio and Emanuele Filippini, Giovanni and Giacomo Tedesco, Sebastian and Nicholas Frey, Simone and Filippo Inzaghi, Alessandro and Cristiano Lucarelli, Damiano and Cristiano Zenoni.
5) Name one of the few clubs in Italy that wear orange.
There are three clubs that wear orange as their main color, AC Pistoiese in the Lega Pro First Division, and US Ivrea Calcio, in the Lega Pro Second Division, and AC Sansovino, who were in Serie C2 a couple of seasons ago.
6) True or False – A Mexican player has played in Serie A.
False. A Mexican player has never played in Serie A. Although some players have been linked to Serie A in the past, like Jared Borgetti and Rafael Marquez.
7) In what year did the FIGC finally allow the kit manufacturer to put their brand logo on the national team jersey?
The year was 1999, when the FIGC allowed newly-appointed Kappa to put their logo on Italy’s shirts. Previously brand logos were not allowed on the Azzurri jersey.
8) Which former Italy U-21 striker played for the Venezuela senior national team?
Vicenza striker Massimo Margiotta was born in Venezuela to Italian parents. He played 8 times with the Azzurrini and scored 1 goal. He then decided to switch nationality at the senior level and has played 11 times withe Venezuelan national team.
9) A good number of Japanese players have tried showing their stuff in Serie A. Name 3.
Possible answers: Kazuyoshi Miura, Takayuki Morimoto, Shunsuke Nakamura, Hidetoshi Nakata, Hiroshi Nanami, Mitsuo Ogasawara, Masashi Oguro, Atsushi Yanagisawa
10) True or False – A first team player cannot play with the Primavera side.
False, a first team player can play with the Primavera side, and most do when trying to gain match fitness after an injury.
11) What is the lowest division of the Italian football pyramid?
Terza Categoria
12) What is the name of the youngest youth team Italian clubs have?
Pulcini
13) Besides Roma, the Sensi family owned another Italian club. Who where they?
The Sensi family owned Palermo from 2000 to 2002 when they sold the club to Maurizio Zamparini for 15 million euro.
14) What was the name of the eccentric former Perugia owner who now lives in exile in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic?
Luciano Gaucci, who had to flee Italy for tax evasion. If he ever steps foot in Italy again he’ll be arrested.
15) Name two clubs who have finished second in Serie A but have never actually won the Scudetto.
Three clubs have finished second in Serie A but have never won a Scudetto: Parma, Perugia, and Vicenza.
16) What was Fiorentina’s name when they played in Serie C2?
Florentia Viola, however once they were promoted to Serie B they became Fiorentina again.
17) What club caused all the controversy in 2003 that allowed Fiorentina to skip Serie C1 and go directly to Serie B based on “sporting merit”?
Catania (whose owner at the time was Luciano Gaucci, go figure).
18) Besides Milan, name another club that has red and black striped kits.
Possible answers: US Foggia, AS Lucchese, SS Virtus Lanciano, Sorrento Calcio

Christian Vieri vs. Moldova in a World Cup Qualifier in 1997
20) Which stadium is the newest in Italy?
If we’re talking about renovations, the newest stadium in Italy is the Stadio Olimpico in Torino, which had to be renovated for the 2006 Winter Olympics. But the newest stadium built from scratch is Messina’s Stadio San Filippo, opened in 2004.
21) True or false – San Marino has 3 club teams that play in the Italian league system.
False. There is only one club, San Marino Calcio, that plays in Lega Pro Second Division.
22) What did famed Roman club Lodigiani change their name to?
Lodigiani are now A.S. Cisco Roma, playing in the Lega Pro Second Division.
23) Inter is represented by a snake. Juventus by a zebra. What animal represents Napoli?
Napoli’s symbol is a donkey.
24) Which two active Serie A players have the best success rate when it comes to scoring penalty kicks?
Currently, there are two players that have never missed a penalty in Serie A and have a 100% success rate. Those players are Alessandro Rosina and Massimo Oddo.
25) Name 3 players from the 1982 World Cup winning squad that became managers.
Possible answers: Dino Zoff, Antonio Cabrini, Franco Baresi, Claudio Gentile, Pietro Vierchowod, Giuseppe Dossena, Giampiero Marini, Marco Tardelli, and Francesco Graziani. Ivano Bordon became a goalkeeping coach (he was the goalkeeping coach for the national team in 2006).
26) What club did Juventus almost sell a young Alessandro Del Piero to?
Parma. However at the last minute Dino Baggio agreed to move to the Gialloblu and Del Piero stayed in Torino.
27) How many clubs has Roberto Baggio played for?
The Divine Ponytail showed us his magic at 7 clubs: Vicenza, Fiorentina, Juventus, Milan, Bologna, Inter, and Brescia.
28) Name the first Italian player to play in the Bundesliga.
This was a little tough. The answer is ex-Roma and Torino striker Ruggiero Rizzitelli, who went to Bayern Munich in 1996 and played for Giovanni Trapattoni.
29) Name an Italian player that has played in Japan.
Only two Italian players have played in Japan, Salvatore Schillaci and Daniele Massaro.
30) Name an Italian player that has played in the United States.
You can go way back to the NASL days and say Giorgio Chinaglia, but only 4 Italian players have played in MLS: Nicola Caricola, Roberto Donadoni, Walter Zenga, and Giuseppe Galderisi.
31) What is the famous slow-motion replay called that all Italian analysis shows use to go over missed calls and incidents?
La Moviola
32) Which stadium in Italy can hold the most people?
The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (or San Siro) in Milan can hold 85,700 people.

Possible answers: Marco Materazzi, Daniele De Rossi, Francesco Totti, Gianluca Pagliuca, and Gianfranco Zola

37) Which active player is currently the highest on the Serie A all-time goalscorers list?
Francesco Totti, who has 178 goals.
38) What Italian player was nicknamed “Il Soldatino”?
Angelo Di Livio
39) What Italian player was nicknamed “Il Principe”?
Giuseppe Giannini
40) What was Fabrizio Ravanelli’s trademark goal celebration?
He would pull his shirt over his head. If he was still playing he wouldn’t have been able to do it because of the yellow card rule.
41) True or False – Roberto Mancini played for Italy in a World Cup.
False. Mancini was only part of the Italy squad for 1 World Cup (1990), but he never stepped foot on the pitch.
42) Which team holds the record for most games unbeaten in Serie A (58)?
Milan, who went undefeated during the Capello years.
43) Which player scored 188 goals in Serie A and was known for his unique stand-still penalty stance?
Giuseppe Signori.
44) Who was the starting Milan goalkeeper throughout the ’90’s that never made even one appearance with the national team?
Sebastiano Rossi, who was called up by Sacchi twice but never actually played.
45) Who did Roberto Baggio score his 200th Serie A goal against?
Baggio scored his 200th goal vs Parma in 2004.
46) Who was Italy’s top scorer at Euro 2004?
Antonio Cassano, with 2 goals.
47) Besides Jose Mourinho, name another foreign manager that has won a Scudetto in Serie A.
Possible Answers: Helenio Herrera, Sven-Goran Eriksson, Vujadin Boskov, and Nils Liedholm.
48) Name 2 players (besides Pirlo, Seedorf, Vieri, and Ronaldo) that have played for Milan and Inter.

Yes, in the summer of 1996 Milan bought Edgar Davids bought he didn’t find much space the following season, only playing in 19 games for the Rossoneri. That summer Juventus took the gamble on him and he exploded. And then he went to Inter for the 2004-2005 season.

By the way Francesco, Udinese also came 2nd in Serie A but have never won the Scudetto.
