Calcio Quiz!

By: Francesco | July 8th, 2009

With most news being transfer rumors now and calcio being in a lull period, I thought this would be an interesting thing to do. I call it Calcio Quiz! (name stolen from an iPhone application. My apologies if the creator is reading this), and I’ll test your knowledge of the calcio world with random questions that I made up. Now I know that we live in a world of technology where all these answers can be researched on the internet, but I encourage you to answer the questions just using your good old-fashioned brain to make it more challenging and to see which one of you readers really knows his calcio knowledge. Post your answers in the comments section (no stealing people’s answers either!) and I’ll make the deadline 1 week. So next Wednesday, July 15, I’ll reveal the answers and we’ll see who knows their stuff. Questions after the jump.

    Here goes…

    1) Name two clubs that have won a Scudetto and are now playing in divisions below Serie B. Hellas Verona, and Pro Vercelli
    2) Before the first official Serie A was formed in 1929, how was a club crowned “Campioni D’Italia”? By winning a regional playoff, I think.
    4) Name a set of brothers currently playing in Italian football. The Filippini twins.
    6) True or False – A Mexican player has played in Serie A. Can’t think of one, and it’s a big country so I guess false. That’s incredible if so.
    9) A good number of Japanese players have tried showing their stuff in Serie A. Name 3. Morimoto, Nakamura of Reggina, and Nakatata of Parma and a few others.
    10) True or False – A first team player cannot play with the Primavera side. False. Most recently, good ‘ole Jonathan Zebina.
    11) What is the lowest division of the Italian football pyramid? Eccellenza
    12) What is the name of the youngest youth team Italian clubs have? At Juve it’s Pulcini but I don’t know if that’s Juve specific.
    13) Besides Roma, the Sensi family owned another Italian club. Who where they?Palermo.
    14) What was the name of the eccentric former Perugia owner who now lives in exile in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic? Gaucci, but I had no idea he’s in exile. Tax reasons?
    15) Name two clubs who have finished second in Serie A but have never actually won the Scudetto.Parma is one…can’t think of a 2nd.
    16) What was Fiorentina’s name when they played in Serie C2? I think that’s when they refounded into the current ACF Fiorentina.
    17) What club caused all the controversy in 2003 that allowed Fiorentina to skip Serie C1 and go directly to Serie B based on “sporting merit”? Catania
    18) Besides Milan, name another club that has red and black striped kits. US Foggia, where my grandparents are from originally actually.
    21) True or false – San Marino has 3 club teams that play in the Italian league system. False. Can’t have more than 1-2 teams in the Eccellenza and Serie D, I’d think.
    22) What did famed Roman club Lodigiani change their name to? It isn’t Roma or Lazio, so I’d guess the only other Roman team I’ve heard of, Cisco Roma
    23) Inter is represented by a snake. Juventus by a zebra. What animal represents Napoli? A Donkey. Does anyone know why, I’ve always been curious.
    24) Which two active Serie A players have the best success rate when it comes to scoring penalty kicks? Francesco Totti and Alessandro Del Piero?
    25) Name 3 players from the 1982 World Cup winning squad that became managers. Dino Zoff, Claudio Gentile, Marco Tardelli.
    26) What club did Juventus almost sell a young Alessandro Del Piero to? Parma, instead of Dino Baggio.
    27) How many clubs has Roberto Baggio played for? 6, I think. Vicenza, Fiorentina, Juve, Milan, Inter, Brescia.
    31) What is the famous slow-motion replay called that all Italian analysis shows use to go over missed calls and incidents? The Moviola
    32) Which stadium in Italy can hold the most people? The San Siro.
    33) What is the famous Italian sports newspaper printed on pink paper? The Gazzetta dello Sport.
    34) What was the name of the controversial ref who was in charge of the 2002 Round of 16 match against South Korea? Byron Moreno.
    35) Name 3 players that have been sent off for Italy in a World Cup. Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi, Marco Materazzi.
    36) In what year did Italy win their first and only European Championship? 1968.
    37) Which active player is currently the highest on the Serie A all-time goalscorers list? Francesco Totti.
    38) What Italian player was nicknamed “Il Soldatino”? Angelo di Livio
    40) What was Fabrizio Ravanelli’s trademark goal celebration? Taking his shirt off.
    41) True or False – Roberto Mancini played for Italy in a World Cup. True, though it wasn’t ‘94.
    42) Which team holds the record for most games unbeaten in Serie A (58)?Milan.
    43) Which player scored 188 goals in Serie A and was known for his unique stand-still penalty stance? Beppe Signori.
    44) Who was the starting Milan goalkeeper throughout the ’90’s that never made even one appearance with the national team? Rossi, Milan never spent money on keepers.
    46) Who was Italy’s top scorer at Euro 2004? Antonio Cassano.
    47) Besides Jose Mourinho, name another foreign manager that has won a Scudetto in Serie A. Heleno Herrera , shockingly, another Inter manager.
    48) Name 2 players (besides Pirlo, Seedorf, Vieri, and Ronaldo) that have played for Milan and Inter. Edgar Davids and Francesco Coco.
    49) Name a goalkeeper that has scored in a Serie A game. Sigh….. Francesco Toldo against Juve.
    50) Which Italian player is the only Italian ever to be the top scorer in Spain’s La Liga? Bobo Vieri with 24 goals in 24 games for Atletico Madrid in 1997-1998.

That was an awesome quiz. Can’t wait to see the answers for the ones I didn’t know and which ones I got wrong.

alessio: 23) Inter is represented by a snake. Juventus by a zebra. What animal represents Napoli? A Donkey. Does anyone know why, I’ve always been curious.

–The story as I have heard it goes like this. Napoli is a greek city, originally, hence the whole Partenopei thing. As a coastal city that relies on the sea, it has as it’s symbol a horse – the animal of Poseidon, like Milan has the Snake, Rome has the Wolf and Turin has the Bull.

Anyways, fast forward 2000 years and the football team lost one of it’s early games quite badly, like 10-0. So, as a sarcastic put down, people called them donkeys instead of horses – you know, like they’re not good enough to be horses.

As often happens in Italy, they adopted the joke to turn the tables on their detractors.

That’s the way that I heard it.
