--The story as I have heard it goes like this. Napoli is a greek city, originally, hence the whole Partenopei thing. As a coastal city that relies on the sea, it has as it&#039;s symbol a horse - the animal of Poseidon, like Milan has the Snake, Rome has the Wolf and Turin has the Bull. 

Anyways, fast forward 2000 years and the football team lost one of it&#039;s early games quite badly, like 10-0. So, as a sarcastic put down, people called them donkeys instead of horses - you know, like they&#039;re not good enough to be horses. 

As often happens in Italy, they adopted the joke to turn the tables on their detractors.
