Cassano to World: Hey! I’m a Moron and a Huge Distraction! Buy Me!

By: Martha | January 7th, 2007

If only he knew. How old do you think Antonio Cassano will be when he finally learns to keep his mouth shut? 30? 60? 140 and in the ground, covered with dirt? Because the dude’s inability to shut his piehole is doing him no good in his efforts to a)get back in the Real Madrid team, or b)get the hell out of Madrid. In the past, his semi-public whining and criticism of Fabio Capello had seen him punished with solitary training, not to mention a shortage of appearances on the pitch. Now, in a move seemingly calculated to render him unable to play in Spain or Italy ever again, the player has launched a fresh broadside against Capello, essentially accusing his former mentor of stabbing him in the back.

According to Cassano, while still at Roma he praised the departed Capello at great personal cost, only to find himself dumped from the Real first team after making “one mistake.” (Whether that mistake was on the pitch or one of his many missteps off it is unclear — there are so many from which to choose.) In response, apparently, Cassano went out, trained hard, and … lost weight. And STILL he’s not in the team — can you believe it? (Clearly he’s not looking around him, because Ronaldo is first choice entirely because of his gut. Talent, schmalent.) Now, as he seems to think is his due, the lad is devoting himself entirely to pouting, though of course it’s not his fault. Witness, if you will, the full sob story:

I need affection, respect, to feel loved and considered important for a club. At Madrid, I have none of the above. Without these elements, I can’t perform. I have had my smile taken away here. In football terms, I am no longer myself.

Sniff. SNIFF. Poor, poor Antonio.

Oh, and to make matters worse? Though there’s still a chance of a move, the transfer frenzy surrounding Cassano was dying down even before this little performance — he could very possibly be looking at another six months of sitting in the stand.

Oh! The poor man! To have your SMILE taken away! The horror!

Although it’s got to be worse being “unable to perform.”

(You know, Antonio, I hear they have a pill for that now.)
