Of Coaches Suspended

By: Martha | August 28th, 2007

Seriously, dude. Stop.As we chortled gleefully about yesterday, the resident genius of French football, Raymond Domenech, has talked himself into a suspension for his team’s upcoming match against the Azzurri. After very specifically accusing Italy of buying the referees for an Olympic qualifier against France in 2000, he was sadly unable to come up with the “dossier” of proof he claimed to have, and UEFA figured a game away from the touchline was appropriate punishment.

Domenech, needless to say, disagrees, and today he appealed the punishment in an effort to be allowed to coach France in Milan on September 8. Whether his presence would be a good or a bad thing for the Azzurri is anyone’s guess, but there seems to be a strong feeling among the commenters here that Domenech is clueless enough that Italy’s best chance at a win might be to have him on the sidelines. This is the man, after all, who refuses to give Philippe Mexes a regular place in his team.

Closer to home, ass-kicker Silvio Baldini has been fined €15,000 and suspended for a month for his hilarious (and, ok, totally inappropriate) assault on Parma coach Domenico Di Carlo. If the suspension goes unappealed, Badlini will miss five games, including his team’s home opener next week, the first game at the Catania ground since the murder of Filippo Raciti last February. Me, I’m hoping for an appeal. After all, “He provoked me” worked for Zidane — at the very least Di Carlo should have to miss a couple games.

Now that Materazzi has informed us of what he actually said to Zidane, was this just a ploy to get us to start talking about another “what did he say?” for the next year? I smell a conspiracy.

Although I suppose Parma-Catania in August is a far cry from extra time in the WC Final in terms of media attention - but still, I wanna know, damnit.

You have one jerk that puts his foot in his mouth, and another that puts it up someone’s ass. Both getting what they deserve.

well put, anthony. i really don’t know who’s the worse coach donadoni or domenech. any benefit gained by domenech’s absence is countered by the fact that donadoni is on our touch line. what a disaster. i mean i hate france and especially that bunch of tosspots collectively known as the french national football team…but how freaking sorry are both of our football administrations when they put these two dorks in charge of the senior national team?

the closer it gets to kickoff, the more pessimistic i am that italia will be able to pull out 3 points here. as for catania…which God did they piss off? man, oh man…looks like catania fans picked the wrong year to stop sniffing glue.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, but what do you expect out of Catania? Sad to see a team so vile come out of Sicily.

btw, what neighborhood in Chicago you in? I got family in Galewood and Melrose p.
