Champions League: A Great Draw and a Terrible Loss

By: Martha | October 3rd, 2007

Doh!Lazio achieved a phenomenal result today, drawing with Real Madrid 2-2 at home. After giving up an early goal to Ruud van Nistelrooy thanks to awful, awful defending, Lazio settled down and gave Real everything they could hand. The capital side were tough and aggressive, attacking mostly via long balls over the top and occasional long passes through the midfield, many of which were cut off. When they got through, though Real were cut open with surprising ease, and Goran Pandev had a shocking miss shortly before his equalizer, skying the ball over Iker Casillias’ goal when he was in all alone. Given a second chance, though, Pandev didn’t make the same mistake again, and instead placed his volley in the top of the Real net, tying the match just after the half-hour mark.

The second half started unbelievably well for Lazio, and they could have been 3-1 up before an hour had passed, but both Tomasso Rocchi and Stefano Mauri failed to capitalize on fantastic chances in the box. To make matters worse for the Italians, van Nistelrooy was put in alone just after the hour mark and easily beat Lazio’s 100 year old keeper Marco Ballotta to put his club ahead, a goal which, given its timing, could easily had completely demolished Lazio’s confidence. They managed to keep it together, though, and Pandev tied the match in the 75th minute, freeing himself just outside the box and slotting the ball home between Gabriel Heinze and Fabio Cannavaro (whose hostile reception by the Lazio supporters was a source of great hilarity to the Spanish announcers). And Lazio held on to the end, earning themselves a well-deserved point; they’ve got two points from two games, and will face group whipping boy Werder Bremen on Matchday 3.

For their part, Milan suffered a heartbreaking loss in Glasgow, going down in the 90th minute to a tap-in by Scott McDonald after a shot was parried into his path by Nelson Dida. Dida reportedly had a dreadful match, and was apparently slapped by a fan (!!!!) after the McDonald goal. [Anyone who watched the match, please tell us what in the comments what the hell happened.] Playing on a soaked pitch, Stephen McManus put Celtic ahead just after the hour mark thanks to poor Milan defending of a corner, but Kaka equalized with a penalty after Ambrosini was held going for a headball just a few minutes later. Milan looked headed for a welcome away point when they failed to clear a corner and Dida’s save felt at McDonald’s feet.

The loss leaves Milan tied for second in the group with three points, and they host surprise leaders Shakhtar in the next round.

Edit: Is Dida the worst diver of all time? Discuss.

Celtic might get the shaft for the fan slap. I haven’t seen it yet but some say that Dida was quite the actor after he was struck by the fan.

Funny, Bob, I was assuming it was a pissed-off Milan supporter. Why would a Celtic fan smack the guy who just gave them the winning goal?! Fools!

Bob: Dida definately exaggerated the contact I think. He was awful in the match as well. Celtic will get punished and UEFA might overturn the result to a 3-0 win for Milan. I have seen some reports that say that will happen. I doubt it but it could well be and that would be a a very bad decision.

And yeah Martha, why would a Celtic fan hit Dida. He basically gifted them the game. I don’t get it…

I saw the slap. Dida looked like more of an idiot than the fan.

The fan ran in front of Dida, harmlessly tapped him on the face, and then ran away. Dida proceeded to chase after him for 3 feet then decided to fall down and pretend he was stabbed. He even got the medical staff to stretcher him off the field and Kalac had to come in! Really funny stuff.

But as a Milan fan, that’s the only thing I can laugh about at the moment…

I don’t suppose the fan threw some late-acting acid, or something? No, probably not, huh.

Here is the video. Dida isn’t worthy of a Golden Globe.

Hey, maybe Dida wasn’t acting… maybe that fan was part of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad and used the Five-Point-Palm Exploding Heart Technique that Beatrix Kiddo used to Kill Bill. Shit he must be good because he got Dida to drop after only 3 and a half steps instead of 5. What bunch of tools. Both of Dida and the fan.

Great match for Lazio today. They played well & maybe could have won that match. I hope they get through to the knock out round.

The theory from the commentators over here in Australia is that Dida might have injured himself diving theatrically to the ground. Otherwise I can’t explain why he was stretchered off.

I love Milan but I am seriously going to need heavy medication to watch anymore games if this keeps up.

    Dida…what a class act!

You know, it’s funny that after that Dida incident everyone seems to have forgotten how terribly dreadful this Milan team is becoming. They can’t put it in the net, they only seem to be able to score on penalties (thank God Kaká is is still doing something right), and when it comes to the most crucial time of the match, they give away stupid goals!! I mean anyone watching the game tonight would find very hard to believe these were the same 11 players (with the exception of Bonera) that were on the field in Athens, the night Milan beat Liverpool and won the Cup back in May…

Now, Adriano Galliani consulted with Berlusconi and said that Milan would not appeal the match despite the incident to Dida, but quite honestly they probably won’t even need to. UEFA is well within their right to take matters into their own hand, and give the Rossoneri a default 3-0 win. Which wouldn’t be all too bad news for Milan, given how awful they are playing.

Regarding Lazio, kudos to them for coming back from behind. If only they could score more than half of the enormous chances they obtain, they’d be a serious contender in the group. Oh, and Pandev has to grow a right foot (that left-foot volley was pretty sweet though… but where was the defense?)

After watching the Milan vs. Celtic game, all I can say is Dida - what a muppet you are, and you should be totally ashamed of yourself. You can’t condone for 1 minute any fan running on the pitch and confronting a player - that is out of order, and there will be repercussions - but for Dida in the first instance to go running after him with what looked like the sole intention of kicking him up the arse, to then stop, fall down clutching his face, have the trainer come on and then be STRETCHERED off the pitch with an ice bag on his face - shameful. The most embarassing thing I’ve seen on a football pitch in years. Shame on you Dida.
