Champions League: And Milan Show Up for the Full 90!

By: Martha | April 11th, 2007

His knees! They worked! Not flashy or magical, perhaps, but an impressive Milan performance nevertheless. Even in the second half, when they mostly just sat back and absorbed pressure, Milan had an answer to whatever Bayern tried Very little scrambling or drama, they just defended in numbers and played the ball into safety — very, very professional, and the work of a team who have been there many times before (as opposed, say, to the Champions League inexperience of Roma). Dida even pitched in with some good saves, which was most reassuring on the back of his butterfingers effort in the first leg.

For their part, Bayern seemed very flat apart from Mark Van Bommel, who was a pissed-off inspiration for the entire match. He put fierce shots on (or at least near) goal on several occasions, worked his ass off, and was shouting and encouraging til the death (again, as opposed to what we saw from Roma’s leaders yesterday).

Whatever was wrong with Bayern, though, Milan well and truly deserved this win, and have earned the somewhat scary opportunity to travel to Man U (as the only non-English team in the last four), where hopefully they’ll have better luck than poor Roma did. We’ve got until the end of the month to wait and worry.

They did it! I guess it’s true that when you expect to be disappointed and then there’s winning,it makes the excitement twice as much. I was nervous up until the 2nd minuite of injury time. Nesta was great and Dida came through also. And for all the good defending and two goals, thier prize is a date with Sir Alex’s boys. Forza Milan!

FORZA MILAN!!! after about 60 minutes i was suprisingly calm. Usually, as a Milan fan, im waiting for any signs of another collapse. Maldini could play another ten years if his damn knees would hold up, jj but does he ever get worse? At the beginning of the game I was worried because passes were going a miss like they did for Roma and the midfield were on top of eachother rather than spreading out I thought. But nothing changes a game like a goal and it was good to see Seedorf score a specky (I have been very critical of him, but no ones better when in form, were you watching Van Basten???)

I do wish poor young Yoann could find a starting spot, I think he tries really hard when he comes off the bench to try and make a big impression and it sometimes is his undoing, hopefully he gets some starts in Serie A soon since Carletto will obviously want to rest some players for the Semi’s, yay! Semis! yay!

Oh, btw, now that Milan has moved to the next level, Now I’ll tell you what Raymond Domenech said about Yoann Gourcuff in the first few seconds of the French Football Federation video. Something along the lines of: “Youann Gourcuff entered the Milan-Bayern match with ten minutes to go. Perhaps not the best moment.”

I completely missed that game — we were at the beach. Must’ve been a heartbreak.

Pat, I feel the same way about Seedorf (though when he’s bad I’m sad more than critical) — when he’s playing his best he’s simply unstoppable. It’s a pleasure to watch him play right now. And Gourcuff really impressed me — probably for the first time — over the weekend against Empoli; I’d love to see him get another 90 minute run again Messina.

Laurie, thank you for protecting me from that tidbit before the game. The conclusion of the first leg was pathetic, but it seemed less Gourcuff’s fault than that of the tired, old legs around him. (Shows what I know.)
