Champions League Draw: Yikes.

Draw image.

It appears someone in Italy has angered the football gods (I blame Moggi), because the Italian sides got some brutal freaking draws today: Roma will face Real Madrid, Milan will play Arsenal, and Inter got Liverpool. I think I can say this and also say I’m confident all three team could well go through: YUCK.

Though the peanut gallery over at the Roma blog seems thrilled with the Real Madrid draw (Predrag Mijatovc, too, is fine with it, so everyone’s happy.), I gotta say I think that could be a daunting task. While Real certainly can look very ordinary (See: The first Lazio match), they also are capable of all kinds of effortless magic (See: The Second Lazio match), and on their day can make anyone look foolish. The same, however, could be said for Roma, and I’m actually really excited for this matchup: Trying to ignore the possibility that both games could turn into static chess matches, they could also offer us some gorgeous attacking football from both sides, especially if Roma are more or less healthy by the time late February rolls around.

Liverpool, meanwhile, scare the crap out of me. They’re England’s version of Milan, in superficial ways: Every time things start to go all to hell for them domestically, they come out and tear through Europe like a different team. And, just in time for them to face Inter, they’re swooning at home: They’re dropping points, Rafa Benitez is fighting with the club’s owners, and his rotation system is being questioned again. Super. (Release Peter Crouch!) Inter certainly are capable of beating Liverpool, but they’re going to have to get a lot tougher, and the match at Anfield is going to be a freaking war.

Oh, Milan. Arsenal are not a good draw for anyone, let alone a team that’s struggling to find its feet. Of course, this is Milan and, assuming Arsenal get the memo and allow them to play, this could be the best match-up of the three — there’s an outrageous amount of ability in the two sides, even if Milan’s average age is roughly twice that of their opponents. I’m guessing Rino Gattuso won’t sleep for the week before the match, he’s going to be so jacked up about the chance to kick Cesc Fabregas around a little bit face off against Cesc Fabregas.

Edit: Thanks to Mike, here’s the video of the draw, so you can see the drama for yourselves.

I think Inter can top Liverpool; too much turmoil at Anfield. AC-Arsenal, that’s another story. AC needs to about-face its home form. Roma-Real is the best tie of the round, without question. I blogged about it today: http://startingeleven.blogspot.com/

Liverpool is who I wanted Inter to Draw!!

Inter’s defense is fast & can keep up with the likes of Torres. Materazzi can certainly contain Peter Crouch and over all they Inter’s defense is fast, moves the ball well and are good in the air. The mid field will be interesting. As far as over all skill @ mid, Inter are better IMO. Liverpool will be more physical but Inter, if healthy, have enough to dictate the pace which can limit how physical LP can be. As for Srtikers… I don’t think the Liverpool defense will be able to handle what they will be dealt. If Inter’s strikers continue at he pace they are at, they will be very hard to contain. Should be a very very Interesting match up. The pool is a very different club in Europe and the only ones that can beat Inter are themselves (it seems). This is what I was hoping for!

Anfield faithful… Get ready to Walk Alone… (I hope)

As for the other Italian Clubs… Yeah it would be nice to see Roma beat Real Madrid. I hate Arsenal and Milan, I guess the Italian Club going on would be better than the English club… but I really hate them both.

As a Roma hater, I can’t wait to watch them lose to Real Madrid. Also as a Roma hater, I am going to enjoy watching them continue to slip up in Serie A. It must be a pretty bad feeling knowing that you are playing for 2nd place knowing that is the 1st loser.

Forza Inter….How good are they going to be when they are actually healthy?? Pretty scary

Derby this weekend…..should be entertaining. Inter 3 Milan 1.

Please. Would I ever neglect Bobo? (And me too. Though Rosenborg aren’t exactly the Little Sisters of the Poor.)

Preach it, Johnny and Paolo! I will try to absorb your confidence in the days ahead.

Martha, absorb it. I am preaching the truth. Did you see Recoba’s comments about the Derby this weekend? He must miss Inter. He said they are too strong for Milan and predicted a 2-0 scoreline. I am also anxious to see how are out of shape, alcoholic, brazilian striker does in Brazil. On that subject though…. I do not know how confident I can be.

Great draw today. Should be a fun knockout round. I am 100% behind Johnny and Paolo. Who will face Inter in the final??? Is my question. One round at a time. I am getting ahead of myself.

oh I hoppe Rino doesn’t hurt Cesc. Martha we like Cesc even if he’s 12 years old LOL

but umm the rest Inter vs. Liverpoo well that’s two teams I can’t stand but am hoping for Inter to come out on top. cause I may just dislike Liverpoo more. and RM vs. Roma yeah that one goes to RM. sorry Roma fans but there be too many injuries to your squad. and the main one Milan vs. Arsenal well honestly this one I’ll watch just cause I have no idea who will win.
