Champions League: Milan in Glasgow Without Strikers

By: Martha | February 20th, 2007

Maldini, preparing to kick Celtic ass.Milan face an incredibly difficult match today as the Champions League reopens. Playing Celtic at Parkhead is a difficult task for anyone, and with a grant total of about .75 healthy and eligible — damn Ronaldo and his appearance for Real — senior strikers (don’t even try to tell me that unproductive egomaniac Oliveira counts as a full striker) it becomes particularly grim. Granted, Celtic are having injury problems too, but still. With Olivier as the only fully fit option up front, Milan should be allowed to start the match with a one-goal lead, or something. Plus, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (AKA the man with the greatest name in creation) is holding a grudge because Milan knocked his PSV Eindhoven side out in 2005, and you can’t underestimate the power of a pissed off of Hesselink.

That said, Milan have made it to the last four in a mind-blowing four of the last five years, so maybe fate is on their side. If that’s not enough, perhaps the footballing gods will find a way to get them a point in recognition of Paolo Maldini’s 100th Champions League appearance — incredibly, he’ll become the only Italian ever to reach that mark. Can we just start erecting statues of him already? I mean, what’s the point in waiting?

You have no idea how much I wish Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink would become French (or join the Galaxy — I believe bother are about equal in possibility) so I could write about him.

Gila and Gattuso, as I understand it, are in the same boat — they’ve made the trip but will have to pass late fitness test to see if they can play.

This is not going to be easy for milan against celtic in their home.Ronaldo not playing and there is not a second striker available.
Gilardino is also not fully fit.Much depends on the mid-field as celtic takes on milan. But the man to watch out for is nakamura
